4. What Was Left Behind: Swallowed by the Dark

Gripping a heavy-duty tactical flashlight, the father sprinted out into the raging storm, plunging into the dense, fog-choked woods behind the house. The moment he crossed the tree line, the atmosphere turned suffocatingly still. A dead silence reigned—no sound of falling rain, no howling wind. All natural ambient sound had been completely swallowed whole by the forest.

His flashlight began to flicker violently, the beam cutting through the skeletal trees until it finally locked onto Thomas. The boy was walking aimlessly through the thicket, his arms hanging limp at his sides, his head tilted at an unnatural, broken angle—like a marionette with its strings cut.

"Thomas! Run!" the father screamed at the top of his lungs.

But as he lunged forward, the space around them warped. From the shadows directly behind Thomas, a towering entity, well over ten feet tall, stepped forth. Its body defied the laws of physics, its limbs elongating and shifting with sickening, disjointed cracks. From its back, eight jet-black tentacles, sharp as lances made of pure shadow, erupted outward, tightly coiling around Thomas's small frame and lifting him into the air.

The father’s flashlight beam illuminated the creature's face. A blank, featureless expanse of stark white flesh. No eyes, no nose, no mouth. Yet, the exact microsecond the father looked into that "face," total paralysis seized him.

The flashlight exploded in his hand. The father collapsed into the mud, his brain burning with the agony of a thousand needles, before his consciousness faded into black.
