Chapter 7 - Cold-Hearted Spectators

Summoning the absolute last of her fading strength, Elena knew they would both
die in that cabin if they didn't get warmth. She wrapped her son tightly in the
blanket, held him against her chest, and began to crawl back toward the Vance
mansion.
Wearing only her blue bikini, her skin covered in layers of frost and snow, she
dragged herself onto the mansion's patio. Through the large glass window, she could see
the warmth of the living room. Richard and Victoria stood there, dressed in elegant
evening wear, holding glasses of red wine.
Elena tapped her frozen hand against the glass, crying out. "Mother! Father!
Please... open the door! Save my baby!"
Inside, Victoria turned and looked down at her shivering, half-naked daughter. She
didn't move. She took a slow sip of her wine, her face completely expressionless.
"Richard, she's outside," Victoria said coldly.
Richard walked to the window, looking at Elena with utter disgust. "She made her
choice. If she wants to play the victim, let her learn what her pride costs." He turned his
back to the window, refusing to unlock the door.
"Please!" Elena cried, her energy completely gone as she collapsed onto the frozen
deck.
Suddenly, a desperate voice pierced the howling wind. "ELENA!"
Logan burst through the trees, dropping his duffel bag as he ran onto the patio. He
fell to his knees, scooping her and the crying baby into his arms.
"Elena! Look at me! I'm here! I've got you!" Logan sobbed, his tears falling hot
against her frozen face. He tried to cover her with his jacket, crying out to the heartless
parents inside. "Open the damn door! She's your daughter! This is your grandson! Help
us!"

Inside, Richard and Victoria merely watched through the glass, sipping their wine
with chilling indifference.
