Chapter 5 - The Mistress’s Golden Trap

Across town, in the penthouse suite of the Four Seasons Hotel, Grant Lawson was having a nervous breakdown.

He stood by the wet bar, pouring his third glass of bourbon with shaking hands. His phone was buzzing relentlessly on the marble counter with calls from banks, creditors, and angry clients whose design accounts had suddenly been frozen by court order.

“Stop pacing, Grant! You’re giving me a headache!” Vanessa Vance snapped from the plush velvet sofa. She was wearing a silk robe, filing her manicured nails with deliberate indifference.

“Stop pacing?” Grant shouted, slamming his glass down so hard the bourbon sloshed over the rim. “My bank accounts are locked! My firm’s servers have been seized by court-appointed forensic accountants! And Noah Whitaker personally threw me out of the hospital!”

Vanessa rolled her eyes. “So what? Whitaker is just posturing because of some old business connection with her dead father. Once we announce the Elliott Bay Pier project at the Gala on Friday, my father will inject ten million dollars into your firm. You won’t need those petty residential accounts anymore.”

“You don’t understand, Vanessa,” Grant said, running his hands through his hair. “Whitaker isn’t just an investor. He owns the port authority board! If he refuses the maritime permits, our blueprints are worthless!”

Vanessa stood up, walking over to him with a seductive, confident sway. She placed her hands on his chest, looking up at him with cold ambition.

“The blueprints are signed and sealed under Lawson Design, aren’t they?” she purred. “We have the master design. The city council has already pre-approved the architectural scope. Even Whitaker can’t block a city-sanctioned infrastructure project without facing massive antitrust lawsuits. My father has the mayor in his pocket.”

Grant swallowed hard, trying to convince himself she was right. “The blueprints are flawless. Thomas Lawson spent five years perfecting the tidal load calculations. Nobody else in the country could design a foundation that stable.”

“Then we have nothing to worry about,” Vanessa whispered, kissing his jaw. “Emma is a broken, postpartum housewife hiding in some charity shelter. She doesn't have the money, the legal power, or the courage to fight us. By Friday night, you will be the most celebrated architect in Seattle, and she will be signing whatever meager settlement check we toss her way.”

Grant looked down at Vanessa, the lingering doubt in his chest suffocated by his overwhelming greed. He had sacrificed his marriage, abandoned his newborn daughter, and burned every bridge he had for this moment.

There was no turning back now.

“Order the display models,” Grant said, his voice hardening with reckless ambition. “Make sure the banners read Lawson & Vance Developments. On Friday night, we take the crown.”
