Chapter 8 - Public Reckoning

The ballroom exploded into frantic whispers. Cameras flashed relentlessly, capturing every second of Grant’s public unraveling.

“What is the meaning of this?” Richard Vance bellowed, stepping forward with his face turning beet red. “Whitaker, this is a private corporate presentation! You have no standing here!”

Noah didn’t even look at Richard Vance. He simply raised his left hand and snapped his fingers once.

Instantly, the hotel’s AV technicians were replaced by Noah’s private cyber-security staff.

The grand projection screen behind Grant flickered.

Instead of the architectural schematics of the pier, a massive, high-definition video feed illuminated the entire ballroom.

It was the Seattle Police Department dashcam footage from four nights ago.

The crystal-clear video showed the pouring rain on 4th Avenue. It showed me collapsing on the freezing sidewalk, clutching my pregnant belly in sheer agony. It showed Grant standing under his dry umbrella, looking down at me with cold contempt.

And then, the ballroom’s surround-sound speakers blasted Grant’s own voice through the hall:

“You can’t go in there like this! The Maserati has untreated nappa leather, Emma! If it gets water-damaged, the detailing alone costs four thousand dollars!”

The crowd gasped in horror. Several prominent socialites covered their mouths in disgust. City council members shook their heads in absolute revulsion.

The video continued, showing Vanessa honking the horn, Grant stepping into the luxury car to protect his luggage, and finally, Noah Whitaker stepping out of his Maybach, kneeling in the filthy street, and lifting me into his arms.

Grant dropped his champagne flute. It shattered into a hundred pieces on the stage floor.

“Turn it off!” Grant screamed, lunging toward the AV console. “Turn it off! That’s private footage!”

Two Whitaker security guards intercepted Grant instantly, holding him by his shoulders and pinning him in place under the blazing stage lights.

I stepped up onto the stage, taking the microphone from the podium.

“Grant Lawson,” I said, my voice echoing with absolute authority across the room. “For three years, you stole from my father’s legacy. You forged my signature on federal copyright documents. You traded stolen intellectual property to Vance Enterprises to finance your mistress and your delusions of grandeur.”

I turned to look at Vanessa Vance, whose face was frozen in humiliated rage.

“And you, Vanessa,” I continued, my gaze piercing through her. “You thought you could step over a dying pregnant woman to steal a waterfront contract. But you forgot one simple rule: you cannot build an empire on a foundation of stolen dirt.”

Noah walked onto the stage, standing beside me like an immovable mountain.

“Effective five minutes ago,” Noah announced to the entire ballroom, “the Port of Seattle has officially revoked all maritime development permits previously granted to Vance Enterprises. Furthermore, Whitaker Maritime has awarded the master architectural contract for Elliott Bay exclusively to Lawson Architecture & Design, under the sole leadership of its rightful owner: Emma Lawson.”

The ballroom erupted into thunderous, standing applause.
