Chapter 4 - The Viral Exposure

"Tonight is the night, Eleanor," Detective Vance said over the secure line. "Your father is scheduled to receive the 'Philanthropist of the Year' award at the annual San Francisco Elite Gala. Every billionaire, politician, and media mogul in the state will be sitting in that grand ballroom."

"And my mother will be right beside him, wearing her expensive diamonds," I added, a cold smile forming on my lips. "Are our files completely ready?"

"Your hacktivist friend did a spectacular job," Vance confirmed. "The automated digital payload is successfully embedded into the gala's main projection server. At exactly 8:45 PM, instead of his corporate tribute video, the ballroom will see the real Richard Vance."

I sat in front of my computer screen in Sacramento, monitoring the gala's live social media stream. At 8:45 PM, the master of ceremonies stepped up to the microphone. "Ladies and gentlemen, please direct your attention to the main screens for a special tribute to our guest of honor, Richard Vance!"

The lights in the magnificent grand ballroom dimmed completely. But instead of a glamorous corporate montage, the massive sixty-foot high-definition screens flickered violently, replaced by a stark, pitch-black background. Bright crimson letters appeared across the screen: "HIGHWAY 95 SURVEILLANCE – RAW FOOTAGE – 02:13 AM."

The entire ballroom fell into a dead, confused silence. Then, the heavy audio speakers boomed with the terrifying, unmistakable screams of a six-year-old boy.

"Mommy, why did Grandma and Grandpa leave us? Are they mad at me?" Eli’s recorded voice echoed off the high marble walls.

The video began to play in crystal-clear quality. The high-society crowd watched in absolute horror as Richard Vance threw my backpack onto the road, intentionally crushed Eli's inhaler under his shoe, and Victoria Vance smiled like a demon as their luxury vehicle sped away into the dark night.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Richard Vance roared, jumping up from his VIP table, his face draining of all color until it turned a sickly shade of gray. "Turn it off! Security, shut the power down right now!"

My mother dropped her glass of expensive champagne, the crystal shattering loudly against the marble floor. "No! This is a lie! It's a deepfake!" she screamed hysterically, covering her face as hundreds of guests began pulling out their smartphones to record the screens.

"It's too late, Richard," I whispered to my monitor.

Before their security team could scramble to pull the server cords, our automated script executed perfectly, uploading the video simultaneously to every major social media platform under the hashtag #VanceFamilyDesertAbandonment. Within twenty minutes, the video had garnered over five million views nationwide. The public outrage was an instantaneous wildfire. The elite family name was turned into a global synonym for monsters.
