Chapter 7 - The Final Trap Sprung

The recess ended, and my parents walked back into the courtroom, their expressions carefully masked with a fake look of deep sorrow and concern. Their lead defense attorney stood up, adjusting his tie, and delivered the exact lie we had just heard them plan.

"Your Honor," the attorney said smoothly, looking directly at the judge. "My clients acted out of extreme fear for their own personal safety on that night. Eleanor Vance suffered a severe, violent mental breakdown inside the vehicle. She threatened her elderly parents, demanded to be let out of the car, and threw her own child's medication out of the window in a fit of manic rage. My clients were merely trying to escape a dangerous situation and fully intended to call the authorities at the very next town."

I couldn't help but let out a loud, mocking laugh from the plaintiff's table. The defense attorney glared at me with intense hatred. "Is something amusing to you, Ms. Vance? This is a serious court of law."

Clara Montgomery stood up slowly, a calm, victorious smile on her lips. "What is amusing, counsel, is your clients' predictable consistency in committing perjury under oath." She turned toward the judge's bench. "Your Honor, we submit Exhibit D—a lawful, real-time audio recording obtained under judicial warrant just ten minutes ago inside the private defense conference room."

The defense attorney turned instantly pale. "Objection! This is highly illegal surveillance! This violates attorney-client privilege!"

Detective Vance stepped forward, presenting the signed document. "The warrant was issued due to a credible flight risk and conspiracy to commit witness tampering, Your Honor. The recording is fully admissible under state law."

"The objection is overruled," Judge Ramirez said grimly, leaning forward. "Play the audio file immediately."

The audio filled the quiet courtroom. My mother's screeching voice about the forty-five million dollars and my father's plan to fabricate a psychotic episode and bribe a witness echoed clearly off the high walls.

"No! Turn it off! That's not me!" my mother screamed hysterically, jumping out of her chair. She took two steps before her legs gave out completely, and she fainted onto the carpeted floor.

My father sat completely frozen, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water as his own words blasted through the speakers. Two large, uniformed bailiffs stepped up silently behind his chair, their heavy steel handcuffs gleaming in the courtroom lights.

"Richard Vance," the lead bailiff said, grabbing my father's arm. "Stand up and place your hands behind your back. You are under arrest for conspiracy, perjury, and child endangerment."
