Chapter 10 - Aunt Ruth’s Trump Card

Aunt Ruth descended the stone steps into the wine cellar with surprising agility, her sharp eyes immediately locking onto Christian Sterling standing beside me at the workbench. She didn't drop her cane, nor did she reach for a weapon; instead, a grim, knowing smile touched her lips.

'Well, well,' Aunt Ruth said smoothly, stopping three steps from the bottom. 'If it isn't the only Sterling with a functioning moral compass. I wondered when you’d finally crawl out from your corporate exile, Christian.'

Christian straightened up immediately, offering a respectful, formal nod. 'Good evening, Miss Ruth. I apologize for the dramatic entrance, but your estate was currently being targeted by my uncle’s cleanup crew.'

'I know,' Ruth replied, walking over to the workbench and placing a heavy, leather-bound ledger down beside the laptop. 'And they won't be the last. Julian Sterling has spent fifty years believing he owns every square foot of soil between Savannah and the coast. He won't let a few financial spreadsheets stop him from burning this house to the ground.'

I looked from Ruth to the old leather ledger. 'What is that?'

Ruth opened the ledger to a yellowed, handwritten page filled with columns of figures and signatures dating back to 1974. 'This is the original partnership agreement between my father and Christian’s grandfather. It proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Sterling empire was built on stolen land titles and forged maritime liens right here in this county.'

Christian stared at the ledger, his breath catching in his throat as he read the faded ink signatures. 'My grandfather kept this hidden in the family vault in Charleston. How did you...?'

'Your mother gave it to me the night before she died,' Ruth said quietly, her voice softening with profound grief. 'She knew what Julian was capable of. She made me promise that if the day ever came when the Sterlings tried to steal Magnolia Hall by force, I would use this ledger to tear their entire financial empire down to the foundations.'

I felt a chill run down my spine as the full magnitude of our position settled over us. We weren't just fighting a corrupt husband or a fraudulent real estate deal anymore. We were holding the smoking gun that could bring down the most powerful shipping cartel in the American Southeast.

'If we release this ledger along with Clayton’s digital audit trails to the federal securities commission and the IRS criminal division simultaneously,' I said, my voice steadying with sudden, fierce determination, 'Julian Sterling won't just lose Magnolia Hall. He’ll lose his entire corporate freedom.'

'There's just one problem,' Christian said, tapping the screen of the secure laptop. 'To execute a synchronized data dump of this magnitude without getting intercepted by my uncle’s cyber-security teams, we need physical access to the main server hub inside Sterling Global headquarters in downtown Savannah.'

Savannah. Right inside the lion's den.

Aunt Ruth smiled—a cold, sharp, fearless expression that proved where I got my tactical instincts. 'Then I suggest you children start packing your bags. Because tomorrow morning, we’re going to pay Julian Sterling a very personal visit.'
