Chapter 14 - The Archives of Deception

The corporate archives building of Sterling Global felt like a tomb after the chaotic roar of the rooftop shootout. Rows upon rows of towering steel shelving units stretched into the dim, climate-controlled gloom, filled with decades of leather-bound ledgers, microfiche reels, and classified corporate acquisitions.

'They’ll sweep this building floor by floor within five minutes,' Christian said, catching his breath as he reloaded his pistol magazine with practiced precision. 'We need to find a data terminal connected directly to the primary corporate mainframe before they lock down the internal network.'

'This way,' I whispered, pulling a master blueprint schematic I had downloaded from the secure server earlier. 'The historical archives terminal on sub-level two connects directly to the legacy vault where my grandfather’s original 1964 deed trust is stored.'

We navigated the labyrinthine aisles of filing cabinets in silence, our footsteps muffled by industrial carpeting. As we reached the secure stairwell leading down to sub-level two, the building's emergency PA system crackled to life, echoing a cold, chilling voice throughout the halls.

Attention all security units. Code Red lockdown initiated. Intruder suspects are located in the archives sector. Apprehend on sight. Lethal force authorized by order of Julian Sterling.

'Lethal force,' Christian muttered, his jaw tightening into a hard line. 'My uncle has officially crossed the Rubicon. He’s willing to murder his own nephew to protect his criminal syndicate.'

'Then we make sure he doesn't get the chance,' I replied, pushing open the heavy steel door leading into the subterranean legacy vault.

The vault was a massive circular chamber lined with digital server racks and reinforced steel deposit boxes. In the center of the room sat an antique mahogany console connected directly to the central mainframe.

I hurried to the console, dropped my encrypted flash drive into the primary USB port, and began typing furiously across the keyboard as lines of firewall bypass protocols flashed across the monitor.

'I’m accessing the primary database now,' I said, my fingers flying over the keys. 'Downloading all financial wire logs, cartel transfers, and the original Magnolia Hall deeds directly to the federal secure cloud server.'

'Hurry,' Christian warned, keeping watch through the glass door of the vault. 'I see flashlight beams sweeping down the hallway. They’re right outside.'

The progress bar on the screen hit 98%... 99%... 100%.

Before I could yank the flash drive from the port, the vault door was violently kicked open, and Julian Sterling himself stepped into the room, flanked by six armed guards.
