Chapter 15 - Face-to-Face with the Phantom

Julian Sterling looked remarkably composed for a man whose fifty-year criminal empire was about to be obliterated in real time. Dressed in an impeccably tailored charcoal bespoke suit, with silver hair combed straight back and cold, predatory eyes that mirrored his nephew's, he carried himself with the absolute arrogance of an untouchable monarch.
'Well, well,' Julian purred, his voice a smooth, venomous baritone as he stepped further into the vault. 'My prodigal nephew, playing white knight to a bankrupt auditor whose family couldn't manage a lemonade stand, let alone a historic estate.'
Christian stepped in front of me, keeping his pistol lowered but within immediate reach. 'It’s over, Julian. The entire financial ledger of your syndicate has just been uploaded to federal prosecutors. You’ve lost.'
Julian let out a low, mocking chuckle, shaking his head slowly. 'Lost? Christian, my boy, you fundamentally misunderstand how the world works. Prosecutors are politicians. Politicians take donations. Donations come from foundations controlled by men like me. By the time the sun sets today, those files will be classified under national security exemptions, and you two will be charged with industrial espionage and corporate sabotage.'
He took another step forward, his eyes locking onto mine with chilling intensity. 'And you, Nora... you should have stayed in the kitchen baking biscuits for your abusive husband. You stepped into a game far beyond your pay grade.'
I didn't cower. I didn't step behind Christian. I stood tall beside him, looking Julian dead in the eye with a cold, unforgiving smile.
'You forgot one vital detail, Julian,' I said clearly, my voice echoing off the concrete walls of the vault.
Julian paused, his eyebrows arching in mild amusement. 'And what is that, my dear?'
'I didn't just upload those files to the federal government,' I replied, tapping the screen of the console where a secondary automated broadcast was actively running. 'I set up a dead-man switch. If my encrypted signal doesn't check in with Detective Vega every fifteen minutes, the entire unedited archive—including audio confessions of your cartel payoffs—drops automatically onto every major news network and social media platform in America simultaneously. Within ten minutes, it will be trending globally.'

The color drained from Julian’s face in a single instant. The polished corporate predator mask shattered, replaced by naked, unadulterated panic.
'You little bitch,' Julian hissed, his hand lunging toward his jacket for a concealed weapon.
