Chapter 15 - Rebuilding the Empire

The weeks following the dismantling of the Bellum Veritas conspiracy felt like sweeping glass off a polished hardwood floor—tedious, careful, but profoundly necessary. With Ethan awaiting trial in a federal holding facility and Marcus Sterling facing decades behind bars for pension fraud, Cole Meridian entered a period of aggressive corporate restructuring.

I sat at the head of the boardroom table, presiding over a room filled with newly appointed division heads and loyal executives. The air of paranoia that had choked the company during Ethan’s tenure was completely gone, replaced by an atmosphere of rigorous accountability and renewed morale.

'Our quarterly audit is complete,' Leonard Sterling announced, standing beside the projection screen as financial charts displayed a steady upward trajectory. 'Not only have we recovered the two point four million dollars Ethan illegally diverted to V.P. Consulting, but federal asset forfeiture has also awarded us seventy percent of the seized assets from Sterling Capital’s liquidated holdings.'

A wave of quiet applause rippled through the board members. I nodded appreciatively, though my expression remained focused. 'Good. But financial recovery is only half the battle. Our reputation in the Asia-Pacific shipping sector took a severe hit during the takeover attempt. I want every single client contract renegotiated with enhanced security protocols by the end of the month.'

'Consider it done, Claire,' Raymond said from his seat to my right. 'By the way, there’s a matter regarding your personal estate that needs your attention.'

I raised an eyebrow. 'My estate?'

'Ethan’s defense attorneys filed a formal petition contesting the prenup, claiming emotional duress,' Raymond explained with a dry smirk. 'Naturally, our legal team tore it to shreds in twenty minutes. The Greenwich mansion, the coastal property, and all personal accounts are officially 100% in your name. Ethan legally owns nothing.'

I let out a quiet sigh, feeling a final, lingering knot of the past five years completely dissolve from my chest. The man who had once slapped me across the face and told me I would leave with nothing was now entirely stripped of his wealth, his status, and his freedom.

Later that afternoon, after the board meeting adjourned, I walked down to the private executive lounge to review the final architectural drafts for our new global logistics center in Singapore. As I passed the grand floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the bustling harbor, my phone vibrated in my pocket.

It was an unknown number with a local area code. I pressed answer.

'Mrs. Cole?' a cold, professional voice spoke on the other end. 'This is Warden Miller from the federal detention center. We have a visitor requesting an urgent, unrecorded meeting with you.'

May you like

I paused, my hand tightening around the phone. 'Who is it?'

'Your husband, ma'am,' Warden Miller replied smoothly. 'He says he has something he needs to tell you before his arraignment.'
