Chapter 5 - The Shadow of Sterling Capital

The name Marcus Sterling hung in the air of my office like toxic smoke. For years, Sterling Capital had lurked at the edges of Cole Meridian’s periphery like a starving wolf waiting outside a cabin door. Marcus Sterling was a ruthless venture capitalist known for gutting traditional maritime and logistics firms, selling off their physical assets for short-term liquidity, and leaving thousands of employees jobless while walking away with hundreds of millions in profit.
'Marcus,' I whispered, the realization solidifying in my chest. 'Of course. Ethan didn’t have the financial backing or the legal acumen to orchestrate a shadow acquisition of this scale on his own. He needed someone with deep pockets and a personal vendetta against my family.'
Arthur nodded grimly, tapping the screen where a corporate flow chart mapped out the intricate web of shell companies linking Pacific Apex Logistics directly to Sterling Capital’s primary Cayman Island holding accounts.
'Marcus has been quietly buying up our distressed corporate bonds through third-party brokerages for the past six months,' Arthur explained, sliding a printed ledger across the desk. 'If Pacific Apex triggers the penalty clause on Friday, Sterling Capital will instantly become our primary creditor. They can force an emergency bankruptcy restructuring, wipe out common shareholder equity, and take absolute control of the company for pennies on the dollar.'
I clenched my fists so tightly my fingernails bit into my palms. 'Not if we expose the collusion first. Can we tie Marcus directly to the fraudulent wire transfers?'
'Not yet,' Arthur admitted, shaking his head. 'Marcus is too smart to put his own signature on an illegal wire transfer. Every transaction was routed through offshore proxies and dummy corporations managed by legal intermediaries in Zurich. We need a smoking gun — something that proves Marcus directly orchestrated the forgery of your signature on the home-equity application.'
Just as Arthur finished speaking, my desk phone buzzed. It was the front desk receptionist.
'Ms. Cole?' the receptionist’s voice came through the speaker, sounding slightly shaken. 'There’s a visitor in the lobby for you. He insists on seeing you immediately. He says it’s regarding... Ms. Vanessa Price.'
I exchanged a quick, sharp glance with Arthur. 'Who is it?'
'His name is Detective Vance from the Manhattan Precinct,' she replied. 'And he has a warrant.'
My blood ran cold. A warrant? Did Ethan manage to convince the police that I was responsible for Vanessa’s fall in the executive suite?
'Send him up,' I said steadily, adjusting my blazer. 'And Arthur, keep the laptop running.'
Three minutes later, Detective Vance — a towering, broad-shouldered man in a rumpled trench coat with tired eyes and a stern expression — stepped into my office, flanked by a younger uniformed officer. He didn't waste time with pleasantries.
'Claire Cole?' he asked, flashing a gold badge.
'I am,' I replied, remaining seated behind my desk to maintain an aura of absolute control. 'To what do I owe the visit, Detective? If this is about yesterday’s incident at the office, my legal counsel has already submitted the security logs and witness statements regarding Ms. Price’s accidental fall.'
Detective Vance let out a humorless snort, stepping further into the office and placing a manila folder on my desk. 'Accidental fall? Ms. Price regained consciousness at City General Hospital three hours ago, Ms. Cole. And her story differs quite significantly from your legal team’s narrative.'
My heart skipped a beat. 'Indeed? What did she say?'
Detective Vance leaned forward, placing his palms flat on my desk, towering over me. 'She stated that you didn't just confront her — you physically assaulted her, dragged her by her hair across the office, and deliberately shoved her toward the glass paperweight with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Furthermore, Mr. Ethan Cole has filed a formal criminal complaint accusing you of domestic violence, assault resulting in severe bodily injury, and corporate sabotage.'
The audacity of it took my breath away. Ethan and Vanessa were turning the narrative completely on its head, weaponizing the legal system to neutralize me before I could uncover their embezzlement scheme.

'That is a complete fabrication,' I said, my voice ice-cold. 'Vanessa slipped on a glass paperweight while attempting to destroy fraudulent financial documents she and my husband forged.'
'Maybe so, maybe no,' Detective Vance replied smoothly, pulling a set of cold steel handcuffs from his belt loop and placing them on the desk. 'But right now, I have a signed arrest warrant issued by a magistrate judge based on sworn witness testimony from an executive officer of this company. I’m afraid you’re going to have to come down to the precinct with us, Ms. Cole.'
