Chapter 13 - Shadows of the Past

Late that evening, I sat with my father on the terrace of his penthouse, looking out over the twinkling lights of the Manhattan skyline.
The air was crisp and cool, and a soft blanket wrapped around my shoulders kept the chill away. My ribs still throbbed occasionally, but the healing was progressing well.
"You handled yourself well today, star," Dominic said, pouring two fingers of aged scotch into his glass.
"I learned from the best," I said, offering a small smile. "Dad... there's something I need to ask you."
Dominic turned his dark eyes toward me. "Ask."
"Twenty-five years ago... why did Arthur Hayes really come to you? Barrett always told everyone his father was a self-made real estate mogul, but you said he begged on his knees."
Dominic took a slow sip of his drink, gazing out into the night sky as long-buried memories resurfaced.
"Arthur Hayes wasn't a mogul," Dominic explained softly. "He was a gambler. Twenty-five years ago, he lost forty million dollars of his investors' money in illegal offshore casinos run by a syndicate in Miami. The syndicate sent hitmen to Greenwich to wipe out his entire family."
I gasped softly. "And he came to you?"
"He came to me weeping, begging me to save his life and his five-year-old son—Barrett," Dominic continued. "I used my influence and my men to settle the debt with the Miami syndicate. I saved Arthur's life and secured his family's safety. In return, Arthur signed over thirty percent of his real estate portfolio to my shell companies as collateral."
"So Barrett's entire lavish childhood... his elite education, his country club lifestyle..."
"Was bought with my protection," Dominic finished grimly. "Arthur spent the rest of his life pretending he was an untouchable blue-blood, hiding the truth from Barrett. He raised Barrett to believe the Hayes family was superior to everyone else, while secretly paying monthly interest to my accounts."
I shook my head in sheer disbelief. "So Barrett grew up believing he was royalty, when in reality, his father was entirely owned by you."
"Precisely," Dominic said. "And when Barrett met you in college, he didn't fall in love with you by accident. Arthur recognized your last name on your college trust documents. Arthur encouraged Barrett to marry you because he thought it would erase his debt to the Romano family."
A heavy silence fell over the terrace. The depth of the manipulation was staggering. My entire ten-year marriage hadn't just been a failure—it had been a calculated business transaction concocted by two desperate men trying to buy their way out of my father's shadow.
"They used me from the very beginning," I whispered, the final piece of the heartbreaking puzzle clicking into place.
Dominic sat down beside me, taking my hand in his large, warm grip.
"They tried to use you, star," Dominic said gently. "But they underestimated who you are. Arthur thought he could outsmart me through his son. Instead, his son destroyed everything they built."
I squeezed my father's hand tightly, feeling the hard, protective warmth of his presence.
"It's over now, isn't it?" I asked softly.
Dominic smiled a rare, warm smile that reached his dark eyes.

"No, my star," Dominic said softly. "The past is over. Tomorrow, your new life begins.
