Chapter 16 - Ashes and New Beginnings

Six months later.

Studio Romano’s new flagship headquarters opened on the top floor of a sleek glass skyscraper overlooking Central Park.

The opening night gala was a stunning success. Hundreds of top architects, international clients, art critics, and city officials gathered to celebrate the relaunch of my design empire. The walls were adorned with my latest project sketches—a thirty-story sustainable luxury hotel project in Paris that had just won the prestigious International Design Excellence Award.

I stood near the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, wearing an elegant ivory velvet evening gown, holding a glass of champagne.

"A penny for your thoughts, boss?" a warm, deep voice spoke beside me.

I turned to see Julian Vance—no relation to Taryn, but rather the brilliant lead structural engineer and architect whom I had hired three months ago to head our international structural division.

Julian was thirty-six, tall, with warm hazel eyes, dark wavy hair, and a genuine, kind smile that reached his eyes. He was a self-made man who had built his reputation through sheer brilliance and honesty, completely untainted by high-society games.

"Just thinking about how far we've come in six months," I said, smiling warmly at him. "The Paris project drawings look incredible, Julian. Your structural layout for the glass atrium is genius."

Julian laughed softly, taking a sip of his wine. "I had a great lead designer pushing me to think outside the box."

He looked at me with an expression that was soft, respectful, and genuinely admiring—a look I hadn't seen in a man's eyes for ten long years.

"You've built something truly remarkable here, Mallory," Julian said quietly. "Not just a business, but a sanctuary."

"Thank you, Julian," I said, feeling a gentle warmth rise in my chest. "It feels good to build something that belongs entirely to me."

Dominic walked over, looking sharp in his classic black tux, accompanied by Rocco. My father looked at Julian, nodding approvingly. Over the past few months, Dominic had taken a liking to Julian, recognizing his integrity and genuine care for me.

"Julian," Dominic nodded. "The French ambassador was just raving about the Paris blueprints."

"Thank you, Don Dominic," Julian said respectfully. "It's an honor to work with your daughter."

"She's the boss," Dominic said with a proud grin, placing a loving hand on my shoulder. "I'm just her security detail."

We all laughed, the sound warm and full of genuine happiness echoing through the bustling room.

As I looked around the glowing room—at my father smiling, at my team celebrating, and at Julian standing beside me with genuine warmth—I realized how much my life had transformed.

The darkness of the basement, the pain of broken ribs, and the toxic betrayal that had threatened to destroy me were now nothing more than distant memories, forged into the steel of my soul.

I had survived the storm. And I had emerged as the queen of my own destiny.
