Chapter 15 - The Clinic Beneath the Clinic

St. Matthew Medical Research Center had closed five years earlier.

Its public records said bankruptcy.

Its underground records told another story.

Noah used an old service code to open a freight elevator entrance beneath an attached parking garage.

Federal agents wanted to lead.

Dominic had warned against police.

Adrian ignored the warning partly.

The visible team would be small.

A hidden federal perimeter surrounded six blocks.

Hannah stayed in the mobile command unit.

This time, she did not argue.

She held Lily’s hand.

Lily had demanded to come to the perimeter.

Hannah agreed only because she understood the particular cruelty of telling a returned child she had no voice.

“No closer,” Hannah said.

“Okay.”

“No running.”

“Okay.”

“If I say down?”

“Down.”

“If I say car?”

“Car.”

Hannah nodded.

Lily looked at her.

“You sound like Dad.”

“Don’t insult me.”

Lily smiled.

Inside, Adrian, Noah, and Mateo descended.

The first sublevel contained old laboratory rooms.

Second contained medical storage.

Third required a palm scan.

Noah placed his hand.

Denied.

Adrian tried.

Denied.

Mateo said, “Biometric seed.”

“Ellie,” Noah whispered.

Adrian’s face hardened.

“They built the door for her?”

“No. For biological Moretti markers.”

Adrian placed his hand again.

The scanner flashed.

PARTIAL MATCH.

Then a voice came through speaker.

Dominic.

“Half the blood is not enough.”

Adrian looked up.

“Show her.”

A screen turned on.

Ellie sat in a child’s examination room.

Victoria was beside her now, wrists free.

Dominic stood behind glass.

Hannah’s voice came through Adrian’s earpiece.

“She looks okay.”

Adrian said, “Ellie.”

The child looked toward the camera.

“Mr. Adrian?”

“I’m here.”

“Mommy?”

“Outside.”

“I want her.”

“I know.”

Dominic stepped into frame.

“You brought Noah?”

“Yes.”

“Card?”

“Yes.”

“Lily?”

“No.”

Dominic’s expression hardened.

“I was clear.”

“So was I.”

“You still think you negotiate from strength.”

“No. I think you need Ellie alive.”

Dominic smiled.

“True.”

“And you need me.”

“True.”

“And Noah.”

“True.”

“Then Lily is unnecessary.”

Dominic sighed.

“She is emotionally necessary.”

Adrian stared.

“You want me afraid.”

“I want you obedient.”

“Different problem.”

Noah whispered, “Keep him talking.”

He opened an electrical panel.

Mateo watched the corridor.

Dominic said, “Your wife understood inheritance better than you. Elena tried to split the line. Lily for love. Ellie for freedom.”

“Do not reduce my children to concepts.”

“Your family did it for generations.”

“Yes.”

Dominic seemed surprised by the agreement.

Adrian continued.

“That’s why it ends.”

Dominic laughed.

“You cannot end blood.”

“No. But I can end what adults demand from it.”

Noah connected a cable.

A hidden interface lit.

“Got it,” he whispered.

The card began decrypting the door protocol.

Dominic noticed something.

“What is Noah doing?”

Adrian said, “Opening your grave.”

Alarm.

The door unlocked.

Mateo pushed through.

Adrian and Noah followed.

The corridor beyond split three ways.

Gunfire from left.

Mateo returned controlled shots.

Adrian went right toward the examination room.

Dominic’s screen feed disappeared.

Ellie screamed somewhere ahead.

Adrian ran.

His lungs burned.

He reached the room.

Empty.

A small auto-injector lay on the floor.

Used?

No.

Cap still on.

One of the new pens Adrian had given her.

Beside it, a crayon drawing.

A rabbit.

An arrow.

Child logic.

Hannah had taught Ellie directions with pictures?

Adrian followed.

Rabbit drawing on the wall.

Another at the next junction.

Ellie was leaving a trail.

He smiled despite fear.

“Smart girl.”

The trail ended at a locked medical theater.

Adrian heard voices.

Victoria.

“Dominic, stop.”

Dominic.

“Move.”

Ellie crying.

Adrian tried the door.

Locked.

Mateo arrived.

“Charges?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Child inside.”

Noah reached them.

“Old observation room.”

He pointed to stairs.

They climbed.

Through the glass below, Dominic stood with Ellie.

Victoria stood between them.

“You don’t need her now,” Victoria said.

“I always need insurance.”

“You said you don’t hurt children.”

“I don’t.”

“You terrorize them.”

Dominic’s face changed.

“Fear heals.”

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“Spoken like every monster who thinks pain is education.”

Adrian looked at Mateo.

“Entry?”

“Two doors.”

Noah said, “I can kill lights.”

“Do it.”

Darkness.

Dominic shouted.

Adrian broke the observation glass with a fire tool.

He climbed through.

Emergency red lights came on.

Victoria pulled Ellie down behind a table.

Mateo entered from side door.

Dominic fired once.

Missed.

Agents breached.

Dominic ran toward a rear exit.

Adrian could have chased him.

Instead, he went to Ellie.

She saw him.

“Mr. Adrian!”

He lifted her.

She wrapped her arms around his neck.

“You came.”

“Yes.”

“Mommy?”

“Waiting.”

Victoria sat against the wall, breathing hard.

Adrian looked at her.

“You stayed with her.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Victoria looked at Ellie.

“Because once in my life I wanted to finish protecting a child instead of merely claiming I tried.”

Mateo shouted from the corridor.

“Falcone’s gone!”

Again.

Adrian looked down at Ellie.

He did not chase.

He carried her outside.

Hannah ran from the command vehicle.

Ellie launched from Adrian’s arms into hers.

“Mommy!”

Hannah collapsed to her knees, holding her.

Lily stood behind them.

Ellie looked over Hannah’s shoulder.

“Who’s she?”

Adrian’s heart stopped again.

Lily stepped forward.

“I’m Lily.”

Ellie stared.

“My sister?”

Every adult froze.

Hannah looked at Adrian.

He looked at Lily.

Lily looked at Ellie.

Then Lily shrugged.

“Maybe.”

Ellie held out the stuffed rabbit.

“You can pet him.”

Lily did.

And for the first time since the nightmare began, Adrian saw two children meeting without understanding the fortune, blood, betrayal, and violence adults had wrapped around them.

He wanted to keep it that way.

Then Noah came out of the clinic carrying a hard drive.

His face was gray.

“Hannah.”

“What?”

“I found the Continuity files.”

“And?”

Noah looked at Adrian.

“The trust isn’t just money.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“What now?”

“Names.”

“Whose?”

Noah swallowed.

“Children.”

Hannah pulled Ellie closer.

Noah continued.

“More than forty.”

Adrian stared.

“What kind of list?”

Noah looked toward the clinic entrance.

“Embryos. Transfers. Hidden heirs.”

Lily whispered, “Like Ellie?”

“Yes.”

May you like

Noah’s next sentence made everyone silent.

“Ellie wasn’t the only Moretti child they moved.”
