Chapter 3 - The Woman Behind the Door

Hannah reached the bathroom and locked it.
The guest suite was beautiful in a way that suddenly felt useless. Marble sink. Brass fixtures. Thick towels. No second exit.
Ellie clung to her neck.
“Mommy?”
“Shh.”
Footsteps crossed the bedroom.
Slow.
Professional.
Hannah looked around for a weapon.
Hair dryer.
Glass soap dispenser.
Metal towel rack.
Nothing good.
The bathroom handle moved.
Ellie began to cry.
Hannah held a finger to her lips.
The handle stopped.
A woman’s voice spoke through the door.
“Hannah, don’t make this harder.”
Hannah recognized it.
Celeste Arno.
One of the estate nurses.
She had helped Dr. Greene earlier.
“Why are you here?”
“To move you.”
“Who told you to?”
“Security.”
“Which security?”
Silence.
Then Celeste said, “Open the door.”
“No.”
“You don’t understand what’s happening.”
“Then explain.”
Another silence.
“You and Ellie are in danger.”
“From who?”
“Adrian.”
Hannah almost laughed.
“Adrian is the one who was poisoned.”
“That doesn’t mean he’s safe.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Open the door and I’ll tell you.”
Hannah looked at Ellie.
The child was watching her.
Children read fear even when adults whisper.
Hannah lowered her voice.
“Ellie, go sit in the tub.”
“Why?”
“Game.”
Ellie obeyed.
Hannah picked up the glass soap dispenser.
The lock began to turn.
Celeste had another tool.
The door opened two inches.
Hannah slammed it shut with her shoulder.
Celeste cursed.
“Stop!”
“Get out!”
“Hannah, listen to me!”
Then another voice came from the bedroom.
Male.
“Problem?”
Celeste stopped speaking.
Hannah knew that voice too.
Evan Pike.
One of Mateo’s security officers.
The same man who had checked Hannah’s employee badge every morning for two months.
Celeste whispered, “She locked herself in.”
Evan said, “Then break it.”
Hannah’s blood went cold.
This was not one frightened nurse.
It was a team.
She grabbed her phone.
No signal.
The suite’s Wi-Fi had disappeared.
Jammer.
Evan hit the bathroom door.
The wood shook.
Ellie screamed.
Hannah moved in front of the tub.
“Don’t touch my daughter!”
Another impact.
The frame cracked.
Then the entire room went dark.
Power outage.
Ellie sobbed.
Hannah could hear men in the bedroom swearing.
Then gunfire erupted in the hallway.
One shot.
Two.
A shout.
“Security! Hands up!”
Hannah pressed herself against the bathroom door.
More movement.
A body hit the floor.
Then Mateo’s voice.
“Hannah!”
She did not answer.
“Hannah Carter, it’s Mateo. Adrian sent me.”
She still did not move.
“Ask me something only I would know.”
Hannah thought.
“Where was Ellie sitting this afternoon?”
Pause.
“Brown leather chair in the medical suite. She had a rabbit with one missing eye.”
Hannah opened the bathroom door.
Mateo stood in the bedroom with three loyal guards.
Evan was on the floor in handcuffs.
Celeste sat against the wall, crying.
Mateo looked at Ellie.
“You both okay?”
Hannah nodded.
“What were they doing?”
“We don’t know yet.”
Celeste shouted, “I was trying to save them!”
Mateo looked at her.
“Save them by breaking into a locked bathroom?”
“Adrian is going to get them killed!”
Hannah stared.
“What do you mean?”
Celeste began shaking.
“Falcone knows who Ellie is.”
The room went silent.
Hannah’s face drained.
“What?”
Celeste looked at her.
“You really don’t know.”
“Know what?”
Evan shouted, “Shut up!”
Mateo kicked his chair leg.
“Let her talk.”
Celeste swallowed.
“Noah Carter wasn’t just a construction worker.”
Hannah’s stomach dropped.
“He was an accountant.”
“No.”
“He worked off-books for Falcone.”
“That’s a lie.”
“He kept records. He tried to leave. He copied something.”
Hannah stared.
“My husband hated organized crime.”
“Because he was inside it.”
“No.”
Celeste’s expression softened.
“He was trying to get out.”
Hannah took one step back.
Ellie held tighter to her.
“What does that have to do with Ellie?”
Celeste hesitated.
Evan said, “Don’t.”
Mateo punched him once in the stomach.
Not wildly.
Precisely.
Evan folded forward.
“Talk,” Mateo said.
Celeste began crying harder.
“Falcone believes Noah hid a key with his daughter.”
“What key?”
“I don’t know.”
“Data?”
“Maybe.”
Hannah looked at Ellie.
Four years old.
Dinosaur overalls.
Stuffed rabbit.
Allergy medication.
Nothing about her belonged in the world these adults were describing.
Mateo’s radio crackled.
“Chief, boss is leaving for Manhattan.”
Mateo grabbed it.
“Tell him wait.”
Static.
“He already left.”
Mateo swore.
Hannah said, “For the boy?”
“Yes.”
“The kidnapped grandson.”
“Yes.”
She looked at Celeste.
“Is Leo really there?”
Celeste shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Mateo’s expression changed.
“A trap.”
Evan laughed despite the pain.
“You’re late.”
Mateo grabbed his collar.
“What’s the target?”
Evan smiled.
“Not Adrian.”
Hannah felt the room shrink.
“Then who?”
Evan looked directly at Ellie.
“The child who has Noah Carter’s eyes.”
Mateo ordered Evan separated from Celeste and searched. In Evan’s jacket they found a disposable phone, three zip ties, and a printed photograph of Ellie leaving an allergy clinic with Hannah six weeks earlier.
Hannah stared at it.
“Someone has been watching us.”
Mateo nodded.
“For at least weeks.”
“Why didn’t your security see them?”
“That is what I intend to learn.”
Celeste said, “Because the people watching her had internal schedules.”
Mateo turned.
“You keep offering useful facts after we catch you.”
“I was scared.”
“So was the child in that bathroom.”
Celeste lowered her head.
Hannah picked up the photograph. Ellie was smiling in it, holding a sticker from the nurse. Hannah remembered that afternoon clearly. She had bought two discounted groceries on the way home and counted the remaining dollars in her wallet before deciding she could afford one small ice cream for Ellie.
Someone had watched that ordinary moment and turned it into intelligence.
Hannah’s fear became anger.
“She gets to have a normal life.”
Mateo looked at her.
“Yes.”
“Do you even know what normal means in this house?”
May you like
For once, Mateo had no quick answer.
Then Adrian’s convoy called from the highway, and the question of normal disappeared beneath a much more immediate problem. Hannah pulled Ellie closer and realized that whatever came next, she would not wait quietly for powerful men to decide her daughter’s fate.
