Chapter 6 - Aunt Victoria Came for the Child

The first explosion struck the north gate.

The secure wing windows shuddered.

Ellie screamed and buried her face against Hannah’s shoulder.

Adrian did not look away from the monitor.

Victoria Moretti remained on screen, calm as if she were calling from a quiet hotel instead of coordinating an assault on her nephew’s estate.

“You did this?” Adrian asked.

“I did many things.”

“Call your people off.”

“Give me the card.”

“What card?”

Victoria smiled.

“The one Noah hid with the child.”

Adrian’s eyes shifted to Mateo.

That was answer enough.

Victoria laughed softly.

“You always were terrible at pretending ignorance.”

Hannah stared at Adrian.

“She knows.”

“Yes.”

“Then move us.”

Mateo was already speaking into his radio.

“Fallback corridor. Team Three to secure wing. Medical route only.”

Adrian said, “Hannah, take Ellie.”

She did not move.

“Where?”

“Underground garage.”

“No.”

“Hannah.”

“Every time someone says they are moving my daughter for her safety, someone tries to take her.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

She was right.

He looked at Mateo.

“Seal the wing.”

Mateo nodded.

“Done.”

Another burst of gunfire came from outside.

Victoria said, “You cannot protect her forever.”

Adrian stepped closer to the monitor.

“I only need to protect her longer than you can keep paying men to die.”

“Still dramatic.”

“Still alive.”

Her smile faded.

“I did not come to kill you.”

“That makes one of us.”

Hannah whispered, “Adrian.”

He heard the warning in her voice.

Ellie was listening.

He softened his tone.

Victoria noticed.

“That little girl changes you quickly.”

“You don’t know her.”

“I know more than you.”

“Then start talking.”

Victoria sat back.

“The embryos Elena created were never meant to be destroyed.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“What are you saying?”

“Elena asked me to preserve one.”

“Why would she ask you?”

“Because she did not trust you.”

The sentence landed harder than gunfire.

Hannah looked at Adrian.

Victoria continued.

“Your wife believed the Moretti family would consume every child born into it. She wanted a way for one child to grow up outside your wars.”

“Liar.”

“Am I?”

“She never told me.”

“That was the point.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“Elena loved me.”

“Yes. And feared what your world would make you.”

The monitor split.

An old video appeared beside Victoria’s face.

Elena Moretti sat in what looked like a clinic office.

Alive.

Dark hair tied back.

Her voice trembled.

“Victoria, if something happens to me, do not let Adrian take the last embryo.”

Adrian stopped breathing.

Elena continued.

“I love him. But I want one child to have a life without guards, guns, and family debts.”

The video ended.

Adrian gripped the desk.

Hannah watched him carefully.

“That was real?”

“Yes.”

Victoria said, “Elena asked me to arrange an anonymous transfer years later. Hannah and Noah were selected because they had no criminal ties and desperately wanted a child.”

Hannah whispered, “Selected?”

“You were vetted.”

Hannah’s face twisted.

“You treated our family like an adoption file.”

“I gave you the child you prayed for.”

“You stole my right to know.”

Victoria’s expression cooled.

“I protected Ellie.”

“By hiding her inside another woman’s body?”

Adrian said, “Why did Noah discover it?”

“Because Dominic Falcone discovered the clinic records first.”

“So Falcone was blackmailing you.”

“No.”

Victoria smiled.

“He was blackmailing Noah.”

Mateo interrupted.

“Boss, west wall breached.”

Adrian looked at the tactical map.

Red indicators blinked.

“Numbers?”

“Unknown. Maybe twelve.”

“Victoria’s?”

He looked at the screen.

She shook her head.

“Not mine.”

Everyone froze.

Adrian said, “Then who is attacking?”

Victoria’s face changed for the first time.

“Dominic.”

“Why are you here?”

“To stop him.”

Mateo stared at the monitor.

“You expect us to believe you sent men through the north gate as a distraction?”

“Yes.”

“That is insane.”

“It worked. Dominic’s people revealed their positions.”

Another explosion sounded farther away.

Victoria said, “Adrian, listen carefully. Dominic does not want Ellie because she is your daughter.”

Hannah hugged Ellie tighter.

“Then why?”

“Because Noah’s card contains account access.”

“To what?”

“The Moretti Continuity Trust.”

Adrian frowned.

He had never heard the name.

Victoria said, “Your father created a private reserve decades ago. It was designed to pass only through biological inheritance.”

“How much?”

“Enough to buy governments.”

Mateo whispered a curse.

Victoria continued.

“Elena changed the beneficiary before she died.”

“To Ellie?”

“Yes.”

Hannah shook her head.

“No.”

Victoria said, “The child controls assets she cannot understand.”

“She is four.”

“Exactly.”

Adrian looked at Ellie.

The girl was tracing the rabbit’s torn seam with one finger.

No idea that adults had placed fortunes, crimes, and death around her tiny life.

Adrian’s fury became quiet.

“Where are you?”

“South perimeter.”

“Come in.”

Mateo looked at him sharply.

“Boss.”

“We need answers.”

Victoria nodded.

“Open the maintenance gate.”

“Unarmed.”

She laughed.

“You truly are Elena’s husband.”

“Unarmed.”

“Fine.”

The screen went black.

Hannah turned on Adrian.

“You cannot let that woman near Ellie.”

“I won’t.”

“You just invited her inside.”

“Where I control the room.”

“You thought you controlled the estate this afternoon.”

That hit.

Adrian took the criticism.

Before he could answer, a security guard burst through the door.

“Boss!”

“What?”

“We caught one alive.”

“Who?”

“Falcone man.”

“And?”

The guard hesitated.

“He says he has a message for Hannah.”

Hannah went still.

“For me?”

The prisoner was brought into the adjacent hall with his hands secured behind him.

He was young, maybe twenty-five, bleeding from a cut above his eyebrow.

He looked directly at Hannah.

“Your husband is alive.”

The hallway fell silent.

Hannah’s knees nearly gave.

“What?”

“Noah Carter.”

She stared at him.

“That’s not funny.”

“I’m not joking.”

“My husband died two years ago.”

The man smiled weakly.

“You identified a burned body.”

Hannah’s face drained.

Adrian stepped forward.

“Where is Noah?”

The prisoner looked at Ellie.

Then at Hannah.

“Falcone has him.”

Hannah whispered, “Why?”

“Because Noah is the only person who knows how to unlock the card.”

Adrian felt every thread pulling toward the same center.

The kidnapped grandson.

The poisoned wine.

The embryo secret.

The trust.

Noah.

Victoria.

Falcone.

None of it was separate.

Hannah grabbed the prisoner’s shirt.

“Where is my husband?”

“Pier Thirty-One.”

Mateo said, “That’s across town from the meatpacking site.”

The man nodded.

“Leo’s not at Fourteenth Street either.”

Vincent’s grandson.

Adrian leaned close.

“Where is Leo?”

The prisoner looked terrified now.

“Same place as Noah.”

“Pier Thirty-One?”

“No.”

“Where?”

He swallowed.

“Under the old cathedral in Queens.”

Adrian released a slow breath.

Two hostages.

Two locations claimed.

Probably one lie.

Maybe two.

Then Ellie spoke from behind them.

“Mommy?”

Everyone turned.

She held the stuffed rabbit.

Something inside it was blinking.

A tiny red light.

Mateo grabbed it gently.

He opened the seam farther.

Beside the memory card capsule was a second device.

A tracker.

Active.

Hannah looked at Adrian.

“They always knew where she was.”

Outside, another explosion lit the windows.

And from somewhere beneath the estate, the power died.
