Chapter 10 - Blood in the Water, the Fall of Evan, and the Reckoning of a Coward

That afternoon, Richard Mercer’s federal bail hearing was held in the Dirksen Federal Building in downtown Chicago.

Due to Gabriel’s overwhelming influence, the presiding judge allowed a public gallery.

The courtroom was packed to capacity with reporters, former employees of Mercer Freight, and elite socialites eager to witness the final destruction of the Mercer dynasty.

Richard Mercer was brought in wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, his wrists and ankles shackled. His face was bruised, his arm in a sling from Gabriel’s warehouse lesson, his hair disheveled, looking thirty years older than the arrogant CEO who had terrorized me for decades.

Beside him sat Evan, also in shackles, his face bruised from his failed home invasion, his eyes darting frantically across the courtroom like a caged rat.

When the bailiffs opened the center doors for the public, Gabriel and I walked in together.

I wore a tailored black wool coat over a sharp white dress shirt, my mother’s sapphire ring gleaming brightly on my right hand. Gabriel walked beside me in an impeccable three-piece charcoal suit, his presence commanding absolute, terrified silence from every person in the room.

We took our seats in the front row of the gallery, directly behind the prosecution table.

When Richard saw me, his bloodshot eyes widened with desperate, pathetic hope.

“Claire!” he rasped, struggling against his handcuffs as the bailiffs pushed him into his seat. “Claire, tell them! Tell the U.S. Attorney it was a misunderstanding! You’re my daughter! You can't let them send me to a maximum-security prison! I did everything for you! I raised you!”

I stared at him with cold, unblinking eyes.

“You didn't raise me, Richard,” I said, my voice carrying clearly across the quiet courtroom. “You broke me until there was nothing left, and then you sold me to pay for your greed.”

Evan began to weep openly. “Claire, please! I’m your brother! Don't let them take me to ADX! I’m sorry! I’m sorry for everything!”

“The time for apologies ended the night you brought mercenaries to murder me in my sleep, Evan,” I replied, my voice devoid of pity.

The judge slammed his gavel. “Order in the court!”

The federal prosecutor stood up and presented the newly uncovered evidence: the money laundering ledgers, the offshore shell companies in Liechtenstein, the surveillance footage of Evan’s assault on Gabriel’s estate, and finally, the sworn deposition detailing the first-degree murder of Eleanor Mercer.

When the murder charge was read aloud, a collective gasp swept through the entire gallery.

Richard’s face turned the color of wet chalk. He collapsed back into his chair, his hands trembling violently as the reality of his fate settled in.

Judge Callahan looked down from the bench with undisguised disgust.

“Richard Mercer, Evan Mercer,” the judge announced, his voice booming through the chamber. “In light of the overwhelming evidence of racketeering, grand larceny, attempted murder, and first-degree premeditated homicide, bail is denied permanently. You will be remanded to the Metropolitan Correctional Center pending immediate trial.”

The judge slammed his gavel down. BANG.

The sound was the final nail in the coffin of my past.

As the bailiffs dragged Richard and Evan through the side exit in chains—Evan screaming and sobbing, Richard staring at me with hollow, defeated eyes—I let out a long, slow breath.

The chains that had bound my soul for fourteen years shattered onto the courtroom floor.

Gabriel wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me close against his side. “It’s over, Claire. They will never touch you again.”

I looked up at him, smiling through tears of pure, unadulterated freedom. “Let’s go home, Gabriel.”
