Chapter 13 - The Trial of Richard Mercer and the Collapse of a Dynasty Built on Lies

Six months after their arrest, Richard and Evan Mercer were formally sentenced in federal court.
Neither Gabriel nor I attended the final sentencing hearing. We didn't need to. We were aboard our private yacht off the coast of Amalfi, Italy, enjoying a two-week Mediterranean cruise before our wedding preparations began.
Matteo sent us the court transcripts via secure satellite feed.
Richard Mercer was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole at ADX Florence for first-degree murder, alongside forty-five years for federal racketeering and wire fraud.
Evan Mercer was sentenced to thirty-five years at USP Terre Haute for armed assault, attempted murder, and conspiracy.
Every asset they had ever touched—their real estate, their vehicles, their offshore bank accounts, and their private art collections—was permanently forfeited to the federal government and redistributed to pay restitution to the workers they had defrauded and to fund the Eleanor Mercer Foundation.
I closed the laptop, took a sip of fresh blood-orange mimosa, and looked out over the sparkling turquoise waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Gabriel stepped out onto the sun deck, wearing linen trousers, his sun-kissed chest bare, holding two fresh peaches. He sat beside me on the oversized lounger, pulling me into the crook of his arm.
“Satisfied, my love?” he asked, kissing the top of my head.

“More than satisfied,” I said, resting my hand on his muscular thigh, watching the sunlight dance across the diamond and sapphires on my finger. “They are in the past, Gabriel. Our future is right here.”
He smiled, leaning down to capture my lips in a slow, sun-warmed kiss that tasted of sweet fruit and unconditional devotion.
