Chapter 4 - What Lies Beneath the Ash of Mercer Freight and Stolen Innocence

By Monday morning, the corporate fallout hit the Chicago financial markets like a tsunami.

The Chicago Tribune ran front-page headlines: MERCER FREIGHT COLLAPSE: CEO RICHARD MERCER ARRESTED IN MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR OFFSHORE EMBEZZLEMENT SCHEME. The federal indictments were unsealed at 9:00 AM, naming Richard Mercer, Evan Mercer, and Victoria Vance in thirty-two counts of wire fraud, tax evasion, and racketeering.

Sitting in Gabriel’s private study, dressed in a sharp navy wool blazer and tailored pants provided by Elena, I reviewed the incoming financial wires on an encrypted terminal Gabriel had set up for me.

“Mercer Freight stock is trading at twenty-two cents,” I noted, my eyes darting across the Bloomberg terminal. “Creditors are filing Chapter 7 involuntary bankruptcy petitions in the Northern District Court.”

Gabriel stood behind me, a cup of espresso in hand, his shoulder brushing against mine as he leaned in to read the monitor. The proximity sent a strange, intoxicating warmth through my veins—a feeling entirely foreign to my traumatized nervous system.

“The bankruptcy court will auction off the logistical assets by Friday,” Gabriel said. “The docks at Calumet Harbor, the two hundred semi-trucks, and the automated cold-storage facilities in Joliet.”

I turned in my swivel chair to look at him. “You’re going to buy them.”

“We are going to buy them,” Gabriel corrected smoothly. “Under a new corporate entity: Vanguard Logistics Group. Fifty-one percent of the shares will belong to Vale Holdings. Forty-nine percent, along with total executive operational control, will belong to you.”

My breath caught in my throat. “To me? Gabriel, I’m twenty-four years old. The board of directors at the shipping exchange will never approve a former Mercer running the terminals.”

Gabriel leaned down, resting both hands on the arms of my chair, effectively caging me between his muscular arms. His face was inches from mine. “The board will approve whoever holds the debt, Claire. And by noon today, I will own one hundred percent of Mercer Freight’s secured debt bonds. You built their systems. You know the drivers, the warehouse foremen, the port authorities. They respect you. They hated your father.”

“I’m terrified,” I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper.

“Good,” Gabriel replied, his gaze intense and unwavering. “Courage isn't the absence of fear, little genius. It’s taking the ledger, stepping into the boardroom, and showing every man who ever doubted you that you can burn his kingdom down with a stroke of your pen.”

Before I could answer, the study doors opened. Matteo entered, his face grim.

“Boss,” Matteo said, nodding respectfully to me before addressing Gabriel. “Evan Mercer’s bail hearing was denied by Judge Callahan. But we have a complication.”

Gabriel straightened, his posture instantly hardening. “Speak.”

“Evan’s private defense attorney was hired this morning by Marcus Morretti.”

The temperature in the room dropped ten degrees.

Even with my limited exposure to the city’s underworld, the name Marcus Morretti was infamous. He was the head of the Morretti Family—the old-money Italian syndicate that controlled the East Coast shipping corridors and Gabriel’s fiercest rival for control of the Great Lakes transit network.

“Morretti is backing Evan?” I asked, ice chilling my stomach.

Gabriel’s eyes narrowed into slits of dark anthracite. “Morretti doesn't care about Evan. Evan is an idiot who couldn't balance a checkbook if his life depended on it. Morretti wants the Mercer Freight shipping manifests from the last three years. He wants to see the logistical routes my organization used to transport untracked cargo through the Midwest.”

“Those manifests are encrypted under my personal biometrics,” I said immediately. “They were stored on a private air-gapped server in the basement of the Mercer headquarters.”

Matteo stepped forward. “Boss, thirty minutes ago, a fire broke out in the Mercer Freight corporate building on Wacker Drive. Chicago Fire Department is currently on scene. Arson is suspected.”

I gasped, pressing a hand to my mouth. “The server—”

“Was it destroyed?” Gabriel asked, his voice deathly calm.

“We don't know,” Matteo answered. “The fire was concentrated on the third floor, but water damage and electrical surges might have fried the basement infrastructure.”

Gabriel turned to me. “Can you recover the encrypted manifests if we access the physical hardware before Morretti’s crew does?”

I didn't hesitate. For the first time in my life, I felt the spark of defiance outshine my fear. Richard had stolen my childhood. Evan had tried to ruin my future. And now, Morretti was trying to destroy the only man who had ever stood between me and total annihilation.

“Give me a portable forensic drive, an insulated electrostatic bag, and twenty minutes in that server room,” I said, looking directly into Gabriel’s eyes. “I won't just recover your manifests—I’ll extract Morretti’s unauthorized backdoors into the city port authority while I’m at it.”

A slow, predatory smile spread across Gabriel Vale’s face. It was the smile of a king who had just realized his new queen was deadlier than his entire army.

“Matteo,” Gabriel commanded, reaching for his shoulder holster hanging behind the desk. “Ready the convoy. The Boss is going into the field.”
