Chapter 15 - Blood and Bylaws

Victor stopped pacing and turned slowly toward the patio. His lips curled into a slow, amused smile as his eyes swept over me from head to toe.
"Claire," he murmured, as if greeting an old acquaintance at a cocktail party. "You look breathtaking. So much like your mother when she realized she married the wrong brother."
My grip on the brass paperweight tightened until my fingers ached, but I kept my posture ramrod straight, my voice devoid of any tremor. "Save the dramatic monologue for someone who cares. You’re trespassing on private property, and federal marshals are already en route to your IP relay location.
Victor laughed aloud, throwing his head back with genuine amusement. "Federal marshals, sweetheart? Do you really think I’d stand here in broad daylight if I hadn't already neutralized your little digital toys? By the time your security team realizes the main server room at Harlow Tower has been locked down by a ransomware loop, every digital record of my existence will have vanished into the ether."
My stomach dropped. The server room. If Victor had physical access to our main mainframe...
"You didn't come here to chat, Victor," my father interrupted, stepping protectively in front of me despite his frail posture. "State your terms and get off my land.
Victor’s smile faded, replaced by a cold, predatory mask. He pulled a thick manila folder from inside his trench coat and tossed it onto the stone patio table. It slid across the marble surface and stopped near my feet.
"Simple terms, brother," Victor said smoothly. "Sign over your remaining seventy-two percent voting shares to my offshore holding corporation, *Vanguard Global*, by sundown. In exchange, I’ll allow you and your precious daughter to walk away with your personal fortunes intact. Refuse, and tomorrow morning, I will file a class-action proxy lawsuit that will bankrupt Harlow Industries, strip you of your assets, and expose every single corporate secret your precious father buried in the seventies."
I looked down at the manila folder, then back up at Victor. A cold, dangerous calm settled over me—the exact same calm I had felt the morning Daniel smashed our daughter's crib.
"You think you hold all the cards, don't you?" I asked quietly, taking a slow step forward.
"I hold the winning hand, Claire," Victor replied with absolute arrogance.
"My grandfather always taught me one rule in business," I said, my voice ringing with razor-sharp authority as I pulled my smartphone from my blazer pocket and tapped the speaker button. "Never negotiate with a ghost who forgot to check if the cameras were recording."
From my phone’s speaker, a synthesized voice echoed clearly across the garden:
*"...Who do you think financed Arthur Vance’s shell companies? Who do you think bought the voting proxies behind your back while you were busy playing doting grandfather?"*
Victor’s smug expression instantly vanished. Color drained from his face as he stared at my phone in absolute disbelief.
"You... you were recording this the entire time?" Victor hissed, taking a sudden step forward as if to lunge at me.
Before he could move, the iron gates at the end of the long estate driveway swung open with a loud groan. Three black SUV cruisers belonging to the FBI’s White-Collar Crime Division tore up the gravel drive, their sirens flashing silently in the afternoon sun, stopping dead around the perimeter of the garden.
Four armed federal agents poured out of the vehicles, their weapons drawn, locking lasers directly onto Victor Harlow.
"Victor Harlow, you are under federal arrest for corporate extortion, international wire fraud, and violation of federal restraining orders," shouted the lead agent, marching forward with silver handcuffs gleaming in the sunlight.
Victor stood frozen, his eyes darting frantically from the agents to me. He realized, with horrifying clarity, that he had walked right into a trap.
As the agents forced him to his knees and snapped the handcuffs around his wrists, Victor glared at me with pure, venomous hatred.
"You're just as ruthless as your grandfather, Claire!" he screamed as they hauled him toward the cruiser. "You think this is the end? The Harlow empire is built on blood! It will consume you too!"
The cruiser doors slammed shut, and the convoy sped away down the driveway, leaving absolute silence in the garden once more.

My father let out a long, shuddering breath, leaning heavily against his cane. He looked at me with a mixture of profound awe and sorrow.
"It's over, Dad," I whispered, putting my arm around his trembling shoulders. "The ghosts are finally gone."
