Chapter 4 - The Sting in the Suburbs

While I was consolidating power at Harlow Tower, Daniel Vance was learning what it meant to live in the real world—a place he had long believed he was exempt from.
After being evicted from our estate and dropped at a dilapidated roadside motel off the interstate, Daniel had spent the first six hours screaming on his cell phone. He called his lawyer, his banking associates, his golfing buddies, and every vice president in the region who owed him a favor.
Every single call went straight to voicemail, or was met with panicked hang-ups. The news of Harlow Industries' massive internal purge moved through the corporate grapevine faster than a wildfire. Within hours, Daniel Vance wasn't just a disgraced executive; he was toxic poison.
By evening, his credit cards were completely blocked. His luxury BMW parked outside the motel had been repossessed by the lender at midday, towed away while he stood pounding on the glass in his pajama pants and a wrinkled dress shirt.
Desperate, broke, and humiliated, Daniel did the only thing his wounded, narcissistic ego could think of. He drove—or rather, took a crowded city bus—back to his mother’s suburban house in the neighboring county.
The house was a modest, single-story ranch with peeling white paint and a small, overgrown lawn. It was the place Daniel had spent years trying to escape, inventing a glamorous backstory of prep schools and old-money upbringing when he first arrived in the city.
He hammered on the front door with his fists until his mother, Evelyn Vance, pulled it open, her face etched with exhaustion and confusion.
"Daniel? What on earth are you doing here? Why aren't you at your mansion? And why are you dressed like that?" Evelyn asked, stepping back as her forty-year-old son practically collapsed into the entryway.
"Ma, everything’s gone," Daniel choked out, his voice cracking as he stumbled into the cluttered living room. "Claire... she ruined me. She lied to me for three years. She’s not some ordinary art historian. Her father is Richard Harlow. The billionaire chairman of Harlow Industries.
Evelyn froze, her hand flying to her mouth. "Richard Harlow? The oil and tech tycoon? The man who owns half the skyscrapers downtown? But... you said your wife’s family was broke! You said her father was an ordinary factory worker!"
"She tricked me!" Daniel snarled, pacing across the worn carpet like a caged animal. "She played the poor, sweet housewife while her father set me up for corporate destruction! They froze my accounts, seized my assets, and had me arrested on fabricated embezzlement charges! Ma, I need money. I need access to your savings account, just until I can hire high-priced lawyers to sue them into oblivion.
Evelyn’s face hardened. She crossed her arms defensively. "My savings? Daniel, you know my pension barely covers my medical bills. I don't have savings! And besides... if you embezzled money from your company, why are you blaming your wife?"
"I didn't embezzle anything! It was standard executive compensation!" Daniel shouted, his face turning red with fury. "Everyone does it! Vanessa and I just... we just utilized perks that were customary!"
"Vanessa? Who is Vanessa?" Evelyn asked, her eyes narrowing sharply. "What happened to Claire and the baby? Where is little Lily?"
Daniel faltered, looking away. "That... that doesn't matter. Claire threw us out—well, she had security throw me out. She’s keeping my daughter from me! She’s an absolute monster!"
Before Evelyn could respond, a sharp knock echoed at the front door.
Daniel spun around, his eyes wide with sudden panic. "Is that the police? Did they track me here?"
Evelyn cautiously walked to the door and pulled it open. Standing on the porch were two men in dark suits holding leather briefcases. Behind them sat a sleek black Lincoln Navigator idling in the quiet suburban street.
"Evelyn Vance?" asked the lead man, his voice flat and professional.
"Yes? Who are you? What do you want?"
"I am Marcus Vance—no relation to your son," the attorney said, flashing a badge and stepping past her into the house. He locked his eyes onto Daniel, who was cowering near the kitchen archway. "Daniel Vance, you are hereby served with a formal notice of civil litigation and asset forfeiture on behalf of Harlow Industries and Claire Harlow."
"Civil litigation?" Daniel screamed, lunging forward. "You can't do this! I demand to speak to Claire! I'm her husband!"
"Former husband, Mr. Vance," the attorney corrected coldly, pulling a crisp set of papers from his briefcase and dropping them onto the coffee table. "Divorce papers were filed two hours ago on grounds of adultery, abandonment, and financial sabotage. Full custody of Lily has been awarded to Claire Harlow, with zero visitation rights granted to you pending psychological evaluation and criminal proceedings.
Daniel stared at the papers as if they were venomous snakes. His knees buckled, and he sank slowly onto the threadbare sofa, his hands trembling violently.

"She’s taking everything," Daniel whispered, the terrifying truth finally settling into his broken mind. "She’s taking my child, my name, my career, my life."
"She’s only taking back what was hers," the attorney replied, turning on his heel and walking out the door into the cold night air.
