Chapter 10 - The Midpoint Reckoning

At 9:00 PM, I walked into the executive penthouse suite at Hale Meridian tower. The lights were dimmed, casting long, dramatic shadows across the polished marble floors and floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the glittering expanse of New York City.
Victor Hale sat behind his massive mahogany executive desk, swirling a glass of twenty-five-year-old single malt scotch. He didn't look up when the heavy double doors opened.
"I expected you hours ago, Ethan," Victor said smoothly, his voice devoid of emotion. "Harrison hasn't returned my calls. I assume you had to deal with him. Disappointing, but not unexpected. Violence runs in our family."
"Harrison is currently cooperating fully with federal investigators and a grand jury," I replied, walking across the room and stopping ten feet from his desk.
Victor’s hand froze mid-swirl. He slowly raised his head, his cold, piercing eyes locking onto mine. A dangerous edge crept into his smile. "A bold bluff. But federal prosecutors don't move that fast without a signed indictment, and I own enough judges in this district to squash any grand jury before it convenes."
"You own the lower courts, Victor. But you don't own the Department of Justice’s elite financial crimes task force—especially when they receive a fully authenticated confession video complete with offshore bank routing numbers, Swiss account keys, and signed wire authorizations," I said, tossing a duplicate USB drive onto his desk. It landed with a sharp clack right beside his crystal scotch glass.
Victor stared at the flash drive as if it were a venomous snake.
"You wouldn't destroy your own company, Ethan," Victor scoffed, though a subtle tremor in his fingers betrayed his mounting panic. "Hale Meridian is your life's work. You built its security systems. If it collapses, your legacy collapses with it."
"My legacy was built on a lie, Victor. A lie you manufactured by destroying the woman who gave birth to me," I said, stepping closer, leaning both hands flat on his desk and towering over him. "Game over. Your empire is finished."
Suddenly, the heavy glass doors of the penthouse burst open.
Adrian rushed into the room, gasping for breath, his face ghostly pale, clutching his smartphone like a lifeline.
"Father! Ethan!" Adrian screamed, his voice cracking with hysteria. "It's... it's all over the news! The SEC just froze all corporate trading of Hale Meridian stock! Federal agents are raiding our Midtown data center right now! The board just called an emergency vote to strip you of your chairmanship, Dad!"
Victor slowly turned his head to look at Adrian, then back at me. The iron-willed titan of Wall Street finally looked his age—a tired, cornered old man whose house of cards had finally collapsed.
"You think you've won, Ethan?" Victor whispered, a chilling, bitter laugh escaping his lips. "You think destroying Hale Meridian hurts me? You don't even know half of what your mother and I built before you were old enough to spell your own name."
Before I could demand an explanation, the elevator chimes echoed down the private foyer corridor, followed by heavy, rhythmic footsteps.

Federal marshals, led by an FBI special agent in a dark tactical vest, marched uninvited into the executive penthouse.
"Victor Hale?" the agent called out, holding up an official arrest warrant. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, money laundering, and illegal confinement. Put your hands behind your back."
