Chapter 6 - The Glass Cracks

The auditorium plunged into absolute, deafening silence. You could hear the hum of the overhead studio lights and the rapid clicking of automated camera shutters recording every single financial document displayed on the giant screen.
Victor Hale stared at the screen, his jaw tightening so hard a muscle twitched violently in his cheek. The mask of calm, sorrowful fatherhood had completely vanished, replaced by a cold, murderous glare.
"Fake news. Fabricated digital garbage generated by a disgruntled, unstable employee experiencing a psychotic episode," Victor boomed into the microphone, his voice cutting through the stunned murmurs of the journalists. "Security! Cut the feed! Arrest this man for industrial espionage and cyber terrorism!"
Three corporate security guards rushed the stage, heavy hands reaching out to grab my shoulders.
I didn't flinch. I turned facing the cameras, raising my hands calmly. "Go ahead, arrest me, Victor. But before you do, remember that those files are synchronized with an automated dead-man's switch. The moment my biometric authentication isn't renewed on my secure server every six hours, copies of these exact documents—along with sworn audio testimonies from your former accountants—are automatically dispatched to the Department of Justice, the SEC, and every major investigative newsroom in North America."
The security guards froze dead in their tracks, looking frantically between me and Victor for instructions.
Adrian grabbed Victor’s arm, his voice trembling with panic. "Dad... what is he talking about? Are those... are those real?"
"Shut up, Adrian!" Victor snapped, swatting my half-brother's hand away with visible contempt. He turned back to me, his eyes narrowing into slits. "You think a few doctored spreadsheets and threats give you leverage, Ethan? You're playing a high-stakes game of poker with a man who owns the table."
"I'm not playing poker, Victor. I'm executing a foreclosure," I replied smoothly, stepping close enough that only he could hear my words. "And by the way, Mom sends her regards. She's resting comfortably at St. Matthew’s Hospital—right under the care of doctors who are currently compiling a complete medical and forensic report on her fifteen-year disappearance, starvation, and physical abuse."
Victor’s eyes flared with genuine shock. For a fraction of a second, the iron-clad facade cracked. "She... she's alive?"
"Surprise," I whispered. "And she remembers everything. Every lie, every beating, every dark night you locked her away in that abandoned estate in Westchester before declaring her dead to the world."
Before Victor could recover, I turned back to the press corps. "Ladies and gentlemen, the emergency board meeting scheduled for this morning is back on. All unauthorized executive decisions made in the last twenty-four hours are null and void under corporate bylaws section 9-B. Effective immediately, I am resuming my duties as Chief Operating Officer, and an independent special committee is being formed to investigate Victor Hale’s criminal conduct."

I pulled the USB drive from the podium, turned around, and walked off the stage as flashbulbs exploded around us like lightning in a storm.
Victor stood frozen at the podium, realizing for the first time in his life that his empire was slipping through his fingers like dry sand.
