Chapter 12 - The Secret Heir

The transition of power from an obscure biotech inventor to the supreme controller of Mercer Global Holdings was executed with surgical, terrifying precision. Within forty-eight hours, Master Thorne and Viktor Vance had integrated forty-two billion dollars in international assets into my private portfolio without a single ripple in the global markets.

Yet, living in the Malibu estate, my daily routine hadn't changed much. I still woke up at 5:00 AM, poured a cup of black coffee, and spent hours working on neural algorithms in my basement lab. Wealth was no longer a goal; it was simply a tool—a weapon to protect my mother and ensure that anyone who ever dared cross us would face absolute annihilation.

It was Friday morning when my private secure line buzzed. It wasn't Viktor or Master Thorne. It was an unrecognized local number with a prefix from my old hometown in Ohio.

I frowned, pressing answer.

“Daniel?” a hesitant, shaking voice whispered across the line. “Daniel Mercer? Is... is that really you?”

The voice triggered a sudden, vivid memory. It belonged to Sarah Jenkins, my old lab partner from my undergraduate engineering days—the only person who had stood by me when Vanessa and her circle mocked my early prototypes, before Sarah had mysteriously vanished from the university ten years ago.

“Sarah?” I said, sitting up straight in my chair. “Sarah Jenkins? Where are you? I haven't heard from you in a decade. Everyone said you moved to Europe.”

“I didn't move to Europe, Daniel,” she sobbed softly, the sound of heavy static and wind whistling in the background. “I... I was trapped. You need to help me, Daniel. Please. I’m in hiding.”

“Where are you? What happened?” I demanded, my tone instantly shifting into razor-sharp alertness.

“I’m back in the city... near our old university district,” she whispered frantically, her voice trembling with sheer terror. “I found out... I found out why my father’s industrial engineering firm was bankrupted fifteen years ago. It wasn't bad luck, Daniel. It was Arthur Sterling... and someone else. Someone currently sitting on the executive board of Halcyon Medical.”

Before I could ask for a name, a sharp, metallic crash echoed through the phone line, followed by a man’s harsh, muffled shout in the background.

“Sarah! Who are you talking to? Give me the phone!”

“Daniel, help me! They found—!”

The line went dead with a hollow, rhythmic tone.

I stared at my phone for three seconds, my blood turning to ice. Someone at Halcyon Medical—someone within my own corporate structure—was connected to the dark conspiracy that had destroyed both my father and Sarah’s family.

I stood up, pressing the intercom button on my desk. “Viktor, get the Gulfstream prepped for an immediate emergency flight back to the Midwest. And mobilize our intelligence unit.”

“Destination, Daniel?” Viktor’s calm voice replied over the intercom.

“Hunting season,” I said coldly, walking toward the elevator.
