Chapter 15 - The Corporate Purge

The eradication of Jonathan Vance’s rogue faction within Halcyon Medical and Mercer Global was executed with the terrifying efficiency of a military tribunal. Within twenty-four hours, every board member, sleeper agent, and corrupt executive linked to the old Arthur Sterling syndicate was systematically stripped of their titles, their assets, and their freedom.

I sat at the head of the massive mahogany conference table in Halcyon’s corporate penthouse. Outside, the morning sun was rising over a calm, peaceful Los Angeles, but inside the boardroom, the atmosphere was thick with reverence and fear.

Viktor Vance stood beside my chair, placing a thick leather-bound dossier on the table. “Every single asset tied to Jonathan Vance’s offshore accounts has been successfully seized and repatriated. The board has unanimously voted to grant you absolute, unchallengeable voting shares across all subsidiaries.”

“Good,” I said, not looking up from my tablet. “What about the regulatory audit?”

“Cleaned, sealed, and approved by the federal oversight committee,” Viktor replied, a faint smile touching his lips. “Nobody in Washington or Wall Street is going to question our operations ever again. You are, for all practical purposes, untouchable.”

The double doors of the boardroom opened quietly, and Sarah Jenkins walked in. She looked significantly better after a night in the Malibu estate’s medical suite. Wearing a clean white blouse and dark slacks, her bruises fading under expert cosmetic care, she walked with a renewed sense of confidence.

“Daniel,” Sarah said, stopping a few feet from the table. “The medical team cleared me. And... Master Thorne showed me the operational reports.”

I stood up, walking around the table to meet her, and offered a warm, reassuring smile. “How are you holding up, Sarah? You’ve been through hell.”

“I’m surviving,” she smiled weakly, shaking her head in sheer disbelief. “When I left the university ten years ago, I thought I was just running from a failing company. I never imagined... I never imagined you’d turn out to be the heir to a global empire.”

“We survived the same storm, Sarah,” I said softly. “And now, we’re going to make sure no one ever has to go through that again. I want you to take over as Chief Research Officer of Halcyon’s neurological division. With your expertise and my patents, we can revolutionize medical technology worldwide.”

Sarah’s eyes widened, tears of gratitude glistening in her lashes. “Daniel... I don't know what to say. Thank you.”

“Don't thank me yet,” I chuckled lightly. “We have a lot of work to do.”

Just then, the boardroom doors flew open with a loud, jarring bang.

Everyone turned. Standing in the doorway, panting heavily and looking completely deranged, was a woman dressed in cheap, worn-out clothes, her hair wild and unwashed.

It was Vanessa.

She had somehow slipped past the building’s heavy ground-floor biometric security by tailing a delivery courier. Her eyes were bloodshot, her face gaunt and hollowed out by months of homelessness, desperation, and total ruin.

“Daniel!” Vanessa screamed, staggering forward before corporate security guards could intercept her. “Daniel, please! I know you’re in here! I saw your face on the financial news!”

Viktor stepped forward instantly, blocking her path, his hand resting on his suit jacket where a concealed security badge gleamed.

“Ma'am, you are trespassing in a restricted corporate facility,” Viktor said coldly. “Security, remove her immediately.”

“No! Wait! Don't touch me!” Vanessa shrieked, thrashing against the two guards who grabbed her arms. She stared past Viktor, her eyes locking onto me with desperate, pleading madness. “Daniel! We were married! We shared a bed! You can't let me live like an animal on the streets! Look at me! Look at what your enemies did to me!”

I didn't flinch. I slowly walked around the conference table, stopping a few feet away from her, my expression as cold and still as carved stone.

“My enemies, Vanessa?” I asked quietly. “You were the one who tore up my check. You were the one who tried to have me arrested while my mother was dying. You did this to yourself.”

“I was wrong!” she sobbed hysterically, dropping to her knees on the polished mahogany floor as the guards held her arms. “I’ll be a good wife, Daniel! I swear it! I’ll do anything you want! Just take me back! Please!”

I looked down at her—the woman who had once laughed in my face, mocked my engineering degree, and stripped my life down to nothing—now broken, homeless, and begging at my feet.

I didn't feel anger. I didn't feel pity. I felt only absolute, profound indifference.

“Security,” I said, turning my back on her and walking back toward my seat. “Escort her out of the building. And make sure she is permanently barred from entering any commercial district in the state.”

“No! Daniel! You can't do this to me! You monster! You monster!” Vanessa screamed, her voice echoing hysterically down the hallway as the guards dragged her out into the cold morning air, closing the heavy mahogany doors behind her forever.
