Chapter 14 - Unmasking the Traitor

The halogen light hummed overhead, casting harsh shadows across the concrete floor. Jonathan Vance didn't look panicked; in fact, a smug, twisted smile played across his lips as he set his coffee cup down on a wooden crate.

“Daniel Mercer,” Jonathan said, spreading his arms wide as if welcoming an old friend to a dinner party. “I must admit, you move faster than our financial analysts projected. Buying out Mercer Global Holdings in a single weekend? Truly impressive. Your grandfather would have been proud.”

I stopped ten feet away from him, my hands buried in my coat pockets. “You knew about my grandfather’s trust.”

“Of course I knew,” Jonathan chuckled softly, standing up and adjusting his silk tie. “Arthur Sterling and I engineered the whole thing fifteen years ago. We orchestrated your father’s bankruptcy, forced your family into poverty, and waited patiently for a blood descendant to invent something brilliant enough to buy back into our corporate web. You were our golden goose, Daniel. You just didn't know you were being farmed.”

Beside me, Viktor Vance’s face turned into a mask of pure fury. He stepped forward, his voice dropping an octave with lethal menace. “You dared use the Vance family name for domestic extortion and syndicate conspiracy?”

Jonathan glanced at Viktor, sneering. “Oh, relax, Viktor. Family names are just brands. Once we liquidated Arthur Sterling, I planned to frame you for corporate embezzlement, seize Apex Imperial’s West Coast reserves, and take over the entire conglomerate myself.”

He gestured casually to the guard holding the steel wrench, who stepped closer to Sarah Jenkins, pressing the cold metal against her temple.

“One word, Daniel,” Jonathan whispered, his eyes gleaming with psychotic ambition. “Sign over controlling voting rights of Mercer Global Holdings and Halcyon Medical back to my shell corporation, or I let my friend here scatter your dear old college friend across this concrete floor.”

Sarah whimpered, tears cutting clean tracks through the dirt and bruises on her face. “Don't do it, Daniel... it’s all a lie...”

I looked at Jonathan, then at the guard, and then slowly pulled my hands out of my coat pockets.

“You know, Jonathan,” I said, my voice dangerously calm, “you studied my patent, my financial records, and my family history.”

“Naturally,” Jonathan replied with a smirk. “We know everything about you.”

“Then you must have missed the one detail in my background report that wasn't digitized,” I said, taking a slow step forward.

Jonathan’s smirk faltered slightly. “What detail?”

“Before I spent six years working on neural engineering in a garage,” I said quietly, “I spent four years working as a tactical lead consultant for defense-grade biometric security systems.”

Before Jonathan could blink, I reached into my coat and pulled out a sleek military-grade laser designator, clicking the activation switch.

Instantly, four red laser dots appeared squarely on the chest of the guard holding the wrench, followed immediately by the distinctive *click-clack* of four automatic tactical rifles being cocked from the dark rafters above the warehouse.

Four Apex Imperial sniper operatives dropped soundlessly from the steel girders, their weapons trained directly on Jonathan and his henchman.

Jonathan’s face drained of every drop of color. He staggered backward, his smug composure shattering into pure, unadulterated panic. “Wait! You can't—!”

“Drop the wrench,” I commanded, my voice echoing off the warehouse walls like thunder.

The guard dropped the steel wrench instantly, raising his hands trembling above his head and dropping to his knees.

Jonathan spun around to run toward the back exit, but Viktor Vance moved with terrifying speed, intercepting him halfway and driving a devastating right hook straight into Jonathan’s jaw.

Jonathan crashed hard onto the concrete floor, spitting blood and teeth, clutching his face as Viktor pinned him down with a heavy knee against his chest.

“Tie him up,” I said coldly, walking past Jonathan’s thrashing body toward Sarah Jenkins. I pulled a tactical knife from my belt and sliced through the ropes binding her wrists and ankles.

Sarah fell forward into my arms, sobbing uncontrollably. “Daniel... I thought I was dead...”

“You’re safe now, Sarah,” I whispered, lifting her gently and handing her over to two medical operatives. “Get her to the private jet. Give her immediate medical attention.”

I turned back, walking slowly toward Jonathan Vance, who was groaning in pain beneath Viktor’s boot.

“You wanted my empire, Jonathan?” I asked, looking down at him with icy detachment. “Well, you’re about to get a very long, very permanent stay in a subterranean federal black site where corporate raiders go to be forgotten.”
