Chapter 13 - The Reckoning

By noon, the rain had cleared, leaving the sky above Columbus a crisp, clean blue. News helicopters hovered over the Vance Capital tower downtown, broadcasting live footage of federal agents escorting Richard Vance out of his penthouse in handcuffs.
The scandal shocked the nation. The ledger provided by Scott Reed exposed a decades-long criminal enterprise involving bribery, illegal smuggling, and corporate murder. Within forty-eight hours, Richard Vance, Victor Vance, and over a dozen corrupt politicians and law enforcement officials were formally indicted without bail.
Inside a quiet private hospital suite, Grant sat in a wheelchair beside Leah’s bed. She was being treated for exhaustion and minor bruises, but for the first time since Grant had met her, the permanent strain on her face was gone.
Ethan sat on the edge of the bed, swinging his legs, carefully polished the silver watch with the corner of his shirt.
"The prosecutors said Scott’s name will be officially cleared," Grant said softly, handing Leah a steaming cup of tea. "The city of Dayton is naming a local vocational school after him—the Scott Reed Academy of Automotive Engineering."
Leah’s eyes filled with soft tears, but this time, they were tears of relief. "He would have hated the attention," she whispered with a gentle laugh. "He was always so quiet."
"He deserved the world, Leah," Grant replied, looking at Ethan. "And so do you and Ethan."
Arthur Sterling stepped into the room, carrying a thick leather briefcase. "Grant, the asset forfeiture court just finalized the settlement regarding Vance Capital’s seized properties. Because Scott Reed was the primary whistleblower whose death was caused by their negligence, the court awarded a massive restitution settlement to his estate."
Leah frowned, shaking her head. "I don't want their blood money, Arthur."
"It’s not blood money, Leah," Grant said gently, reaching over to place his hand over hers. "It’s what Scott worked his whole life to give you—security. Enough to ensure Ethan never has to worry about his future, his education, or having a safe home."
Ethan looked up from the watch, his eyes wide. "Does this mean Mom doesn't have to clean rooms at night anymore?"
May you like
Grant smiled, his heart swelling with emotion. "Your mom never has to work another night shift in her life, Ethan. Ever."
