Chapter 9 - The Ghost in the Machine

Back at the estate, the sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon, casting pale blue light through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Grant’s study. Leah was sitting awake on the couch, wrapped in a blanket, unable to sleep until she heard the sound of footsteps.

She stood up instantly as Grant entered the room, drenched in rain but holding the black notebook in his hand.

"You found it," she breathed, tears springing to her eyes.

"Scott was smarter than all of them," Grant said, setting the notebook and the USB drive on his desk. "He recorded every transaction Vance made through his garage for three years. He kept serial numbers of the illegal shipments and the names of every official Vance paid off."

Grant’s chief legal council, Arthur Sterling, was already sitting at the conference table, reviewing the digital files extracted from the USB drive. Arthur, a veteran attorney who had defended Fortune 500 companies for thirty years, looked up with wide, shocked eyes.

"Grant... this isn't just local corruption," Arthur said, his voice trembling slightly. "This USB contains offshore account numbers in the Caymans belonging to federal judges, state senators, and top executives at Vance Capital. This evidence is explosive."

"Can we take it to the Department of Justice?" Leah asked hopefully.

Arthur frowned, leaning back in his chair. "That's the problem. Look at the names on this list. The regional head of the FBI in Ohio is on Vance’s payroll. If we march into the local field office with this, the evidence will disappear within an hour, and Grant will be arrested on fabricated charges."

Leah’s face fell. "So... we can't do anything? They’re too powerful?"

"No," Grant said, his voice dropping into a cold, lethal quiet. "It just means we don't play by their rules. We don't go to the local authorities. We take this straight to the court of public opinion and the federal prosecutor in Washington."

Suddenly, the landline phone on Grant’s desk began to ring. Grant picked up the receiver, his expression unreadable.

"Grant Mercer," he said.

"You’re playing a dangerous game, Mercer," a smooth, cultured voice rasped through the speaker. It was Richard Vance himself. "My nephew told me about your little stunt in Dayton. You think having a few million dollars makes you untouchable?"

"I don't think I’m untouchable, Richard," Grant replied calmly, glancing at Leah. "I just know you’re a murderer who hides behind a expensive suit."

Richard Vance let out a dry, chilling laugh over the line. "Scott Reed was a bug under my shoe, Grant. And his pathetic wife and son are going to meet the same fate if you don't bring me that notebook by noon today. I have people standing outside your estate right now, Mercer. You can't protect them forever."
