Chapter 5 - The Safehouse Fortress

An hour later, an armored SUV escorted by two dark sedans pulled up to the iron gates of Grant’s private estate on the outskirts of the city. The property was surrounded by stone walls, security cameras, and high-tech sensors. For Leah and Ethan, who had spent the last two years moving between damp motels and dilapidated apartments, the grand mansion looked like a castle from a fairytale.
"Is this where you live?" Ethan asked, his nose pressed against the tinted glass of the SUV window.
"It is," Grant said gently. "And for as long as you need, it's where you live too."
They were greeted by Grant’s trusted housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, a warm, grandmotherly woman who immediately swept Ethan off to the kitchen for hot cocoa and fresh pastries. Leah stood in the grand foyer, holding her worn canvas bag, feeling completely out of place beneath the crystal chandeliers.
"I can't accept this, Grant," Leah said, wrapping her arms around herself. "We don't belong in a place like this. We’re simple people."
"Scott didn't leave me money, Leah," Grant said, leading her into his private study. "He gave me a chance. He gave me dignity. Everything I have today exists because he didn't turn his back on me when I was a broken kid. I’m not giving you charity; I’m paying a debt I’ve owed for fifteen years."
Leah sat down on the leather sofa, burying her face in her hands. "Scott talked about you, you know. Even after you left."
Grant stopped in his tracks. "He did?"
"All the time," Leah sobbed softly. "Every time he saw a news article about your business growing, he’d cut it out and keep it in a drawer under his workbench. He was so proud of you, Grant. He kept saying, 'That's my boy. Look at him go.'"
Tears stung Grant’s eyes, but he swallowed them back. Hearing those words was a gift he never thought he’d receive, but it also burned a fire deep within his chest. Scott had given him everything, and the Vances had taken Scott’s life.
A quiet knock on the study door broke the silence. Marcus, Grant’s chief intelligence officer, stepped inside with a tablet in hand. His expression was grave.
"Boss, we ran a deep trace on Vance Capital’s recent movements as you requested," Marcus said. "It’s worse than we thought."
"What did you find?" Grant asked coldly.
"Scott Reed wasn't killed just because of bearer bonds," Marcus revealed, handing the tablet to Grant. "He found evidence that Richard Vance was using local auto shops and freight yards to smuggle counterfeit medical supplies into regional hospitals. Scott threatened to go to the federal authorities. That's why they shut him down—and why they put something toxic in his medicine when he went to the hospital."
Leah gasped, clutching her chest. Grant’s eyes turned into pure ice as he read the classified files on the screen.

"They murdered him to cover up a corporate crime," Grant whispered, his voice trembling with dark rage. "And they think they got away with it."
