Chapter 11 - The Arrest

The sun had dipped below the Raleigh skyline, casting long, bruised shadows across the asphalt when the flashing red and blue lights of two police cruisers illuminated the pavement outside the downtown diner where Evan was sitting. He had spent the entire afternoon begging for a cup of coffee and a day-old bagel, his pride completely shattered.

The diner door swung open with a sharp bell chime. Two police officers in dark blue uniforms stepped inside, their eyes scanning the booths until they locked onto Evan’s hunched, disheveled figure.

"Evan Bennett?" the senior officer asked, resting his hand on his utility belt.

Evan looked up, blinking blindly against the flashing lights reflecting through the diner window. His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. "Yes? What is this about? I haven't done anything wrong!"

"Evan Bennett, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and falsification of business records," the officer recited mechanically, stepping forward and grabbing Evan by both arms, yanking him out of the vinyl booth. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

"No! There’s some mistake! Let go of me! This is corporate harassment!" Evan screamed, thrashing as the cold steel handcuffs snapped shut around his wrists with a sickening click. Customers in the diner stared in stunned silence, whispering behind their coffee cups as Evan was hauled toward the exit.

He was shoved into the back of the police cruiser, the heavy metal door slamming shut behind him with a final, echoing thud. The car pulled away from the curb, accelerating into the rainy night toward the county detention center.

Meanwhile, across town in an upscale North Hills apartment, Sabrina Cole was packing her designer bags into a panic, preparing to flee the state before the federal net tightened around her as well. She zipped her Louis Vuitton suitcase shut, grabbed her car keys, and rushed toward her front door.

As she swung the door open, three federal agents in windbreakers marked *FBI - Financial Crimes Unit* stepped out of the hallway shadows, blocking her exit.

"Sabrina Cole?" the female agent asked, holding up an arrest warrant and a federal badge. "You’re under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and corporate embezzlement. Put your hands behind your back."

Sabrina dropped her suitcase, her face turning chalk white as the handcuffs were fastened around her wrists. "No... no, you don't understand! Evan forced me! I was just an employee!"

"You can explain it to the federal magistrate in the morning, Ms. Cole," the agent replied coldly, guiding her down the hallway toward the elevator.
