Chapter 9 - The Collision Course

Sabrina strode toward the gravesite, her designer heels sinking into the wet turf with every step. She looked pale and exhausted, her professional armor completely stripped away, leaving only a desperate, cornered animal.

"You lying, cowardly bastard," Sabrina spat, pointing a trembling finger straight at Evan as he knelt in the mud. "You’re trying to pin the entire corporate fraud and the hotel getaway on me? You were the one who authorized every single expense report! You were the one who promised me a promotion if I played along with your little executive games!"

Evan scrambled up from the mud, his face contorted with murderous rage. He lunged toward her, ignoring the open casket and the grieving family entirely. "You bitch! You ruined my life! You seduced me, you trapped me, you drained my accounts, and now you have the nerve to show your face here?"

"I ruined your life?" Sabrina shrieked, dodging his clumsy grasp as Marcus Vance and one of the security guards quickly stepped in to separate them, pinning Evan’s arms behind his back once again. "You were a miserable, insecure failure hiding behind your wife's family wealth! You told me every single night how much you despised her and how you were going to strip her of her shares the moment you took over the company!"

The cemetery fell into a stunned, horrified silence. The minister lowered his Bible, and Martha gasped, covering her mouth with her trembling hands.

I stood motionless beside Noah’s white casket, my eyes locked onto Evan’s terrified, guilt-ridden face. The mask was completely gone. The truth had laid them both bare, exposed in all their rotting ugliness before the grave of the child they had betrayed.

"Is that true, Evan?" I asked softly, my voice cutting through the drizzling rain like a razor blade. "Did you plan to strip me of my shares? Did you despise me all those years while I raised your son and managed your household?"

Evan stopped struggling. His shoulders slumped, and he stared at the wet grass at his feet, unable to meet my gaze. "Claire... I... I was stressed. The pressure at the firm was—"

"Save it," I interrupted, turning my back on him. I picked up a single white rose from the top of the casket, kissed its petals, and laid it gently back onto the polished wood.

I turned back to Marcus Vance. "Escort these two off the property immediately. If either of them comes within five hundred yards of my home, my office, or this cemetery, have them arrested for trespassing and violation of the restraining orders I filed this morning."

"Understood, Claire," Marcus said firmly.

As security guards grabbed Evan by the shoulders and forcefully dragged him away down the gravel path, Evan screamed my name, thrashing wildly in the mud. Sabrina fled behind them, cursing his name into the rainy wind.

The service resumed in peace. We lowered Noah’s white casket into the earth, surrounded by quiet tears and enduring love. But as I stood by the graveside watching the earth cover my little boy, I knew that Evan and Sabrina’s nightmare was only just beginning.
