Chapter 15 - The Final Judgment

The federal courtroom in downtown Raleigh was packed to capacity. Journalists, financial analysts, and corporate insiders filled every wooden bench, whispering and craning their necks as the bailiff banged his gavel.
"All rise for the Honorable Judge Margaret Sterling presiding," the bailiff announced in a booming voice.
Judge Sterling, a stern-faced woman with sharp eyes and decades of judicial experience, walked into the courtroom and took her seat behind the mahogany bench. She adjusted her glasses, looking down at the thick stack of sentencing memoranda before her.
"We are here for the sentencing of Evan Bennett in the matter of United States versus Bennett," Judge Sterling announced, her voice echoing off the high ceiling. "Mr. Bennett, you have entered a formal plea of guilty to all counts of federal wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and conspiracy. Furthermore, your public video confession has been entered into the permanent court record.
Evan stood at the defense table beside his court-appointed attorney. He wore his orange jumpsuit, his head bowed, refusing to look up at the gallery where reporters flashed cameras and whispered.
"Before I hand down my sentence, does the defendant wish to address the court?" Judge Sterling asked.
Evan’s defense attorney nudged him gently. Evan slowly rose to his feet, gripping the edges of the wooden podium with white knuckles. He cleared his throat, but no words came out at first. He looked toward the gallery, where I sat alone in the front row, dressed in my severe black mourning suit, my expression carved from absolute ice.
"Your Honor..." Evan’s voice was barely audible, raspy and broken. "I have nothing to say in my defense. Every charge is true. Every accusation is justified. I traded my family, my honor, and my precious son’s life for greed and vanity. I destroyed everything that was ever truly good in my life. I accept whatever punishment this court deems necessary.
Judge Sterling listened intently, her expression unreadable. She looked down at the documents, then back up at Evan.
"Mr. Bennett, white-collar crime is a severe offense against society, but the moral depravity demonstrated by your actions during your son's final hours transcends ordinary corporate corruption," Judge Sterling said, her voice ringing with cold authority. "You abandoned a dying child for self-indulgence. You abused your position of trust, violated federal law, and brought shame upon your family name.
She picked up her wooden gavel, pausing for dramatic effect.
"It is the judgment of this court that you be sentenced to twenty-five years in federal prison, without the possibility of parole for the first fifteen years. Furthermore, all remaining personal assets, trusts, and future earnings are subject to immediate government seizure and full restitution to Bennett Meridian Logistics and the Noah Bennett Pediatric Health Initiative.

The gavel struck the wood with a final, echoing crack that sealed Evan’s fate.
As federal marshals stepped forward, snapping heavy handcuffs back onto Evan’s wrists, he didn't fight back. He allowed himself to be led away through the back doors of the courtroom, disappearing into the dark corridor of the federal penitentiary system forever.
