Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Carter Empire

---------------------------------------

The immediate aftermath of the non-wedding was a whirlwind of high-stakes corporate warfare and raw public scandal. By that evening, the video of my father punching Daniel Carter at the altar had gone completely viral across every social media platform. A guest had recorded the entire incident on their phone, and the sight of my bruised face, Daniel's arrogant confession, and the sudden raid by federal agents became the number one news story in the country.

My father and I sat in the secure, private office of Marcus Vance, miles away from the media circus surrounding the cathedral and the Carter corporate tower. I had changed out of the heavy wedding gown into a simple, comfortable sweater and jeans. My father sat next to me, his hands wrapped tightly around a mug of black coffee. The fierce rage that had driven his fist into Daniel's jaw was gone, replaced by a deep, aching sorrow for what I had endured.

"Why didn't you tell me, Emily?" he asked, his voice cracking with emotion. "For months, you were going through hell right under my nose. If I had known what he was doing to you, I would have ended him a long time ago."

I placed my hand over his. "Because if you had moved too early, Dad, they would have used their corrupt judges to destroy you and ruin the company. They had a paper trail ready to frame you for financial crimes. I had to wait until the evidence was undeniable. I had to let them think they had won completely so they would get sloppy."

Marcus Vance entered the office, carrying a thick stack of legal documents and a sleek tablet displaying breaking financial news.

"The trap snapped perfectly," Marcus announced, a grim satisfaction evident in his eyes. "The FBI seized all of Carter Global's main servers within minutes of the arrest. The data Emily pulled from Daniel's laptop gave them the exact IP addresses and access keys for their hidden offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands and Zurich. Over three hundred million dollars in illicit funds have been completely frozen by the federal government."

"What about Daniel?" I asked, my voice steady despite the adrenaline still pumping through my veins.

"Arthur Carter used a high-level connection to get a federal magistrate to grant emergency bail," Marcus replied, his brow furrowing. "Daniel is out. He's currently confined to the Carter estate uptown under electronic monitoring. Arthur is pulling every single string he has left. He's trying to suppress the domestic violence charges by claiming the video was digitally manipulated by Hayes Logistics to launch a hostile corporate takeover."

My father stood up, his eyes narrowing into slits. "Let him try. Arthur thinks he's the only one in this city with history and leverage. He forgets how he got those global shipping routes twenty years ago."

"What do you mean, Dad?" I looked at him, surprised.

Charles Hayes took a deep breath, looking out the window at the twinkling lights of the Manhattan skyline. "Before your mother passed away, I wasn't just a regular logistics provider, Emily. I handled sensitive transportation contracts for the federal government and some very high-profile international syndicates. When I decided to go completely clean and legitimate for your mother's sake, Arthur Carter begged me to hand over my exclusive shipping routes to him. I did, but I kept the original, unredacted manifests. Those manifests prove that Carter Global's entire foundation was built on smuggling illegal contraband and laundering money for cartel factions in South America."

I gasped. "You have proof of that?"

"I have the physical ledgers locked in a vault that Arthur doesn't even know exists," my father said coldly. "I kept them as an insurance policy. I never wanted to use them because it would drag up ghosts from my past that I wanted to leave buried. But the second that bastard put his hands on my daughter, he signed his family's death warrant. I am going to dismantle everything they own, brick by brick."

Just then, my phone buzzed on the table. It was an unknown number, but when I answered it, Vivian Carter's shrill, venomous voice pierced through the line.

"Listen to me, you ungrateful little bitch," Vivian spat, her aristocratic composure completely gone, replaced by pure, unadulterated malice. "You think you've won something? You think that little stunt at the church is going to save you? You signed a prenuptial agreement that strips you of everything. Our lawyers are already filing a fifty-million-dollar defamation lawsuit against you and your father. Daniel is going to walk away from these ridiculous charges, and when he does, we will make sure you and your pathetic father end up living on the streets. Withdraw the statements you gave to the FBI, or I swear to God, you won't live to see the end of the year."

My father reached over, took the phone from my hand, and pressed the speakerphone button.

"Vivian," my father said, his voice terrifyingly quiet.

There was a sudden, sharp pause on the other end of the line. "Charles," she muttered, a hint of nervousness entering her tone.

"Enjoy the air inside your mansion tonight, Vivian," my father said slowly. "Because by next week, you, your corrupt husband, and your cowardly son will be sharing a concrete cell. Do not call my daughter again."

He hung up the phone and smashed it to pieces beneath the heel of his leather shoe.

"Marcus," my father turned to his attorney. "Deploy the second phase. Initiate the emergency clause in our shipping contracts. We are cutting off every single delivery route to Carter Global's distribution centers effective immediately. Let's see how long their empire lasts when they can't move a single piece of inventory."
