Chapter 5 - Unraveling Secrets

-----------------------------

The cold, metallic click of the panic closet door locking echoed in my ears as I pulled my knees to my chest in the absolute darkness. Outside, the muffled sounds of shattering glass and heavy footsteps reverberated through the safe house. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. I heard a loud, violent shout, followed by the deafening crack of a gunshot. I gasped, pressing my hands over my mouth to stifle a scream.

Minutes passed like excruciating eternities. Then, a heavy silence fell over the house.

Suddenly, three distinct knocks tapped against the hidden bookshelf door—our pre-arranged signal. "Emily, it's clear. You can come out," Ethan's voice called out, sounding breathless and strained.

I pushed the release mechanism, and the bookshelf swung open. The living room was a scene of chaos. One of the large glass windows was completely shattered, and a large, burly man in tactical gear was pinned to the floor, unconscious and securely bound with heavy plastic zip-ties. Ethan stood over him, holding his firearm, a sharp cut bleeding slightly along his temple.

"Are you okay?" I rushed to him, my hands trembling as I examined his injury.

"I'm fine, just a graze from a broken piece of glass," Ethan said, giving me a reassuring but grim look. "The other guy fled into the woods when I returned fire. But look at this."

Ethan held up a highly advanced, military-grade encrypted tracking device he had stripped from the unconscious mercenary's vest. "This isn't something you buy on the black market. This is proprietary hardware. This tracker was hard-coded to ping a very specific, internal server address."

He plugged the device into his laptop, running a rapid decryption script. As the lines of data flashed across the screen, my eyes widened in complete disbelief. The tracker wasn't broadcasting its location data to Daniel Carter's penthouse or the Carter Global headquarters.

It was transmitting directly to an encrypted terminal inside the main building of Hayes Logistics—my father's own company.

"Oh my god," I whispered, the room spinning around me. "There's a traitor inside our own house. Someone inside Hayes Logistics is feeding our exact physical locations and movements directly to the Carters."

"Exactly," Ethan said, his face darkening. "And based on the administrative clearance level required to access this specific internal server node, it has to be someone in the executive suite. Someone who has been working hand-in-hand with your father for years."

The realization hit me like a physical blow. The Carters' plan to hostilely take over Hayes Logistics wasn't just an external threat; it was an inside job. They had a mole placed at the very top of my father's inner circle. This mole had been systematically feeding them our proprietary shipping routes, financial vulnerabilities, and now, my secret location.

Without losing a second, I grabbed Ethan's satellite phone and dialed my father's secure private line. It rang three times before he answered, his voice sounding exhausted and tense.

"Emily? Thank god. Is everything alright?"

"Dad, listen to me very carefully," I said, my voice shaking but urgent. "The safe house was just attacked. Ethan handled them, but we pulled a military-grade tracker off one of the mercenaries. Dad... the tracker is being routed through an internal terminal inside Hayes Logistics. We have a mole in the executive suite."

There was a long, chilling silence on the other end of the line. When my father spoke again, his voice had dropped to a dangerous, gravelly whisper.

"I know," he said.

"You know?" I asked, stunned.

"I discovered a series of unauthorized financial transfers about an hour ago," my father explained, his tone laced with a profound, bitter betrayal. "Someone has been quietly siphoning our proprietary shipping manifests and routing them to a shell company owned by Arthur Carter. I just finished reviewing the digital access logs with our chief of cybersecurity."

"Who is it, Dad?"

"It's Thomas Fletcher," my father revealed, the name sending a shockwave through my system. Thomas Fletcher was my father's vice president of operations, a man who had stood as the best man at my parents' wedding, a man I had called 'Uncle Thomas' my entire life.

"Thomas has been heavily gambling on offshore sports books and ran up a debt of nearly fifteen million dollars to a cartel-linked syndicate," my father continued, his voice cold as ice. "Arthur Carter found out about the debt, bought out Thomas's markers, and used them as absolute leverage. Thomas has been selling us out for the past six months to keep himself from being killed by his creditors. He's the one who gave Daniel the modified prenuptial agreement, and he's the one who gave them your safe house coordinates."

"Where is Thomas now?" I asked, a sudden surge of anger replacing my fear.

"He doesn't know I've found out yet," my father said. "He thinks I'm currently at a logistics conference in Chicago. He's scheduled to meet with Arthur Carter's private emissary at a secluded warehouse down at Pier 42 at midnight tonight to hand over the final, unredacted global government shipping contracts. If those contracts fall into the Carters' hands, they can use them to force a federal intervention and seize our entire fleet under national security protocols."

"We have to stop him," I said fiercely, looking at Ethan, who was already packing up his equipment and pulling up the schematics of Pier 42 on his tablet.

"We aren't just going to stop him, Emily," my father said, a terrifying determination in his voice. "We are going to let him walk right into the trap. I'm already heading to Pier 42 with Marcus and a team of federal agents who aren't on the Carter payroll. I want you and Ethan to stay back."

May you like

"No, Dad," I said unyieldingly. "Thomas sold me out to a monster. He let Daniel abuse me and kept his mouth shut just to save his own skin. I am coming to that warehouse. I want to look him in the eye when his house of cards falls apart."
