Chapter 7 - The Counter-Strike

-----------------------------

With Daniel Carter back in federal custody under maximum-security, no-bail conditions, and Thomas Fletcher singing like a bird to the federal prosecutors in exchange for a protective custody agreement, the Carter dynasty was officially in freefall. But a cornered beast is always the most dangerous, and Arthur Carter was far from dead.

The very next morning, Arthur Carter launched his ultimate counter-strike. Utilizing a network of corrupt offshore servers and a highly paid black-hat hacking syndicate, the Carters executed a massive, coordinated cyber-attack against the entire infrastructure of Hayes Logistics.

I was sitting in our corporate command center alongside my father and our chief IT security analyst, Sarah Jenkins, when the main monitors suddenly turned bright red.

"Sir, we have a catastrophic breach," Sarah announced, her fingers flying across her keyboard at an impossible speed. "A massive ransomware virus is tearing through our primary operational mainframe. It's bypassing our firewalls using a set of administrative master keys that could only have been leaked by Thomas Fletcher before his arrest."

"What's the damage, Sarah?" my father asked, his voice calm but incredibly tense.

"It's locking down our automated dispatch systems globally," Sarah explained, sweat dripping down her face. "Over four thousand cargo trucks, thirty freight trains, and twelve massive cargo ships are currently frozen in place. The system is demanding a fifty-million-dollar ransom in cryptocurrency within four hours, or the hackers will completely wipe our entire historical database and delete all proprietary government routing software. If that happens, Hayes Logistics will face immediate federal contract termination and billions of dollars in liquidated damages. We will be bankrupt by nightfall."

My father leaned against the conference table, his knuckles turning white. Arthur Carter wasn't trying to save his son anymore; he was trying to drag us down into the abyss with him. It was a mutually assured destruction strategy.

Just then, the main video screen in the room blinked, overriding our system. Arthur Carter's face appeared on the display. He was sitting in his luxurious penthouse office, looking remarkably composed, sipping a glass of scotch.

"Charles," Arthur said smoothly, his voice dripping with aristocratic arrogance. "I assume you are currently watching your life's work dissolve into digital ash."

My father stepped in front of the camera. "Arthur. You really are a desperate old fool, aren't you? Launching a federal cyber-terrorism attack against a government-contracted logistics provider? You just guaranteed yourself a permanent stay in a supermax facility."

Arthur laughed, a cold, dry sound. "Proof, Charles? Good luck tracing this attack back to me. It's being routed through twenty different proxy servers in non-extradition countries. By the time the feds figure it out, Hayes Logistics will be a ghost company. But I am a reasonable man. I am willing to stop the script right now under two very simple conditions."

"Name them," I said, stepping into the frame next to my father.

Arthur's eyes locked onto me, filled with a venomous hatred. "First, you, Emily, will sign an official affidavit stating that all evidence of abuse and corporate fraud you provided to the FBI was completely fabricated under duress from your father. Second, your father will hand over the physical ledgers from thirty years ago that he keeps hidden in his vault. Do this, and your company survives. Refuse, and you can watch your father's legacy burn to the ground in the next three hours."

The screen went black. The countdown timer appeared on the monitor: 02:59:59.

"Dad, what do we do?" I asked, a wave of panic washing over me. "We can't sign that affidavit, and we can't let him destroy the company."

Ethan Vance, who had been sitting quietly in the corner of the room reviewing code strings on his tablet, suddenly stood up. A sharp, brilliant smile played across his lips.

"He just made his final, fatal mistake," Ethan announced.

"What do you mean, Ethan?" my father asked.

"Arthur thinks he's a criminal mastermind because he hired top-tier hackers," Ethan explained, turning his tablet around to show us a complex, glowing digital map. "But he forgot one crucial thing: when he broadcasted that video call directly into our compromised system, he had to use an active, high-bandwidth connection from his current physical location to bypass our security firewalls. While he was busy gloating, I used an advanced network tracing tool that I developed for my investigative work. I didn't trace the ransomware; I traced his live video feed."

Sarah Jenkins gasped, looking at Ethan's tablet. "Oh my god. You traced the source point of the video broadcast."

"Exactly," Ethan nodded triumphantly. "The video wasn't sent from an offshore proxy. Arthur is so arrogant that he broadcasted it directly from his private residential server inside his Manhattan penthouse. And because his residential server is directly linked to the same local network hosting the ransomware control script, we now have the exact digital backdoor we need to reverse the entire attack."

"Can you shut down the virus, Sarah?" my father asked immediately.

"With Ethan's trace route? Yes, sir!" Sarah said, her confidence instantly returning. "Give me twenty minutes, and I can inject a counter-virus directly into Arthur Carter's private server, terminate the ransomware, and completely unlock our entire global fleet."

"Do it," my father commanded. "And Ethan, send that exact network trace data straight to the director of the FBI's cyber-crimes division. Arthur Carter just provided the definitive, physical link connecting himself directly to a federal cyber-terrorism attack."

I looked at Ethan, a profound sense of relief and admiration washing over me. He had just saved our family's company, not with violence or dirty money, but with sheer brilliance and quick thinking. He looked back at me, giving me a warm, reassuring wink that made my heart flutter in a way it hadn't in a very long time. The Carters' final counter-strike had just turned into their final execution order.
