CHAPTER 11: THE SOURCE OF MADNESS

To enter the mouth of a titan is to leave the physical world behind.

As Rin plunged headfirst into the colossal, gaping maw of the White Sea Elephant, the roaring of the ocean died, replaced by a wet, heavy, suffocating silence. She did not slide down a throat; she fell into a vast, corrupted cavern of flesh and bone. The ceiling above was a towering dome of black, rotted palate, from which giant, jagged sheets of baleen hung like the shattered rafters of a burned-down cathedral.

Everything was coated in the Blight.

A thick, viscous layer of black, tar-like oil covered the giant tongue beneath her, pooling in the deep crevices of the creature's throat. The walls of muscle and fat did not pulse with healthy, life-giving blood; they shuddered with a sickly, rhythmic twitching, mapped by thousands of weeping, purple-glowing veins that branched out like a web of diseased roots.

Rin hovered in the center of this grotesque chamber, clutching the First Salt Crystal to her chest. The crystal’s pure, blue-white light was her only shield, casting a sharp, defensive sphere of illumination that kept the surrounding dark bile from touching her skin. Wherever the white light struck the rotted flesh, the black oil sizzled and hissed, turning into wisps of foul-smelling gray steam.

Thump... Thump... Thump...

The titan’s heartbeat was deafening here. It didn't sound like a heart; it sounded like a heavy iron hammer striking a hollow anvil, vibrating through the water and rattling Rin’s skull. But beneath that heavy rhythm, she could hear the secondary noise—a frantic, high-pitched scratching, like millions of tiny teeth gnawing on bone.

[You are inside, Echo,] the Guardian’s voice resonated in her mind, though the connection was frayed, buzzing with the static of the surrounding rot. [The parasite is not just on his skin. It has hollowed him out. It has nested at the base of his thoughts. You must ascend toward the cranial vault, behind the throat.]

"How do I get up there?" Rin thought back, her amber eyes scanning the slick, shifting walls of the esophagus.

Before the Guardian could answer, the black oil pooling on the giant tongue began to bubble violently.

Slowly, the liquid rose, coalescing into hideous, semi-solid shapes. They were not the Drowned she had fought in the ruins above. These were the Core Parasites—slender, worm-like entities made entirely of black bile, their bodies translucent, revealing writhing masses of needle-thin bone fragments shifting inside them. They had no eyes, but their elongated, wet heads split open to reveal concentric rings of razor-sharp teeth.

They did not make a sound in the water. They simply lunged, a dozen black spears shooting toward her from the dark.

Rin reacted instantly. Channeling the power of the symbiosis, she kicked her legs, her basalt-scaled body darting upward with a fluid, terrifying speed. She spun mid-water, her hardened, obsidian-like claws slicing through the nearest parasite. The entity dissolved instantly into a cloud of harmless black ink, but three more clamped onto her legs.

The coldness of their grip was absolute. It wasn't just physical cold; it was a mental frost that threatened to freeze her thoughts, filling her head with the echoed, screaming agony of the dying Leviathan.

[Pain... burning... make it stop... crush the light...] the hive-mind of the Blight roared in her brain.

Rin screamed, a burst of silent bubbles escaping her lips. The glowing green runes on her neck flared defensively, fighting against the invasive thoughts. She forced her arm downward, pressing the pulsing Salt Crystal directly against the writhing mass of parasites on her leg.

FLASH.

The pure, primordial light erupted from the crystal. The parasites shrieked—a silent, high-frequency vibration that shattered several of the titan’s decaying baleen plates. They disintegrated into ash, but the recoil of the energy pulse threw Rin backward, her body slamming hard against the rotted roof of the mouth.

She gasped, drawing in a breath of the seawater. Her gills rippled, filtering the oxygen, but the water tasted heavily of sulfur and decay. She had to move. The air—and the energy—was running out.

Clutching the crystal tightly, Rin scrambled upward, using her basalt claws to dig into the fibrous, weeping walls of the throat. She climbed past the massive, pulsing epiglottis, ascending into a narrow, vertical canal that led toward the base of the skull.

The pressure here was different. It felt hot, thick, and greasy.

As she squeezed through a tight sphincter of muscle, she emerged into a wide, hollow chamber. This was the cranial vault—the cavity directly beneath the Leviathan’s brain.

Rin stopped, her breath catching in her throat.

In the center of the chamber sat the brain of the titan. It should have been a majestic, glowing organ of soft white and blue light. Instead, it was a horror.

A massive, bulbous mass of necrotic, gray-black tissue hung from the ceiling of the vault, shivering under the weight of the infection. But the brain itself was not the source of the madness. Resting directly behind it, wrapped around the spinal column like a monstrous, beating heart, was the Blight Core.

It was a giant, pulsing mass of fused bone, black coral, and weeping tendons. In the center of this necrotic heart sat a single, massive, milky-white eye—the very same diseased eye Rin had seen in her vision of the Silt Runner's demise. The eye was blind, weeping rivers of black ichor that flowed down the Leviathan’s spine, poisoning its nervous system and driving it into a state of homicidal rage.

[So... tiny...] a wet, multi-tonal voice whispered in Rin's head, originating directly from the beating core. [The Guardian sends a child... a fragile spark... to fight the endless tide. We have swallowed your ships. We have swallowed your people. We will swallow your light.]

The black coral surrounding the core began to grow, shooting out long, jagged spikes that blocked the entrance to the chamber. From the ceiling, thick tendrils of rotted muscle descended, wrapping around Rin’s arms and legs, pinning her in place.

Rin struggled against the bonds, but her basalt strength was met by the collective, crushing force of the titan’s own musculature. The tendrils squeezed her wrists, trying to force her to drop the Salt Crystal.

"Bael..." she thought, her vision beginning to blur as the pressure in the chamber increased. "I'm sorry. I don't think I can..."

[Do not look at your weakness, Echo!] the Guardian’s voice cut through the darkness, a powerful, commanding thunder that shattered the Blight's mental hold. [Look at the light you carry. The crystal is not a weapon to be swung. It is a key. Speak to the titan's spirit. Reach past the rot!]

Rin looked at the giant, weeping brain of the Sea Elephant. She stopped fighting the physical tendrils. She closed her eyes and let her consciousness slip past the physical boundaries of her body, diving straight into the infected network of the titan.

She did not seek to fight the Blight. She sought the host.

Deep within the chaotic, pain-filled storm of the Leviathan’s mind, she found him.

He was not a monster. He was a gentle, ancient giant, curled into a tight ball of pure agony in the darkest corner of his own consciousness, weeping as the parasites tore his thoughts apart. He was so tired. He had been fighting the poison for decades, protecting the reefs until he had nothing left to give.

"I hear you," Rin projected her thoughts directly to the weeping titan, her mind radiating a soft, maternal warmth. "The noise is going to stop now. I have the light. Let me in."

In the physical chamber, the giant, rotted brain of the Sea Elephant suddenly gave a soft, shuddering pulse. The weeping veins turned from a sickly purple to a faint, desperate blue.

The host was answering. It was fighting back against its own parasite.

The pressure on Rin’s limbs suddenly relaxed as the titan forced its own muscles to release her.

Rin opened her eyes, her amber gaze locked onto the beating Blight Core. She kicked her legs, launching herself forward through the collapsing black coral spikes. She raised the First Salt Crystal high above her head, its blue-white light flaring with the combined, defiant energy of her soul and the dying leviathan.

May you like

"This is for the deep," she whispered.

With a final, desperate cry, Rin drove the jagged, pulsing crystal directly into the center of the weeping white eye of the Blight Core.
