CHAPTER 15: THE PURGE OF SECTOR SEVEN

The floor of the auxiliary brig did not just shake; it groaned with a high-pitched, metallic shriek that vibrated directly through the soles of Rin’s bare feet.
Clank-clank-clank-clank.
Deep within the structural spine of the Rust Ship, the gargantuan pneumatic pistons of the primary ballast pumps had begun their final, irreversible cycle. The ballast purge had started. Millions of gallons of pressurized seawater were being forced into the lower civilian residential sectors, not to stabilize the ship, but to drown the infection—and the four thousand innocent souls trapped within it.
"The pumps..." Bael gasped, clutching his bruised ribs as he leaned heavily against the dented iron wall. His single eye was wide with horror. "If those valves lock in the open position while the lower hull is breached, the pressure differential will tear the residential sectors to shreds. It’ll implode Sector Seven like a crushed tin can!"
"They want to hide the evidence," Elias said, his blind, milky-white eyes staring toward the ceiling as he listened to the rushing torrents of water moving through the pipes behind the walls. "Commander Thorne does not leave witnesses. He wants to drown the Blight, the station, and the truth in the same grave."
Rin did not speak. Her basalt-plated fingers clenched into tight, stone-hard fists, her obsidian-like claws scraping softly against each other with a dry, mineral sound. The emerald-green runes on her neck flared, their light turning from a soft pulse to a fierce, continuous white-hot glow that cast sharp, flickering shadows across the iron cell.
The network was screaming in her head.
Through the water filling the lower corridors, she could feel the sheer, blinding panic of the people in Sector Seven. She felt the frantic splashing of children, the desperate pounding of fists against locked iron bulkheads, and the cold, rising tide of seawater swallowing the lower residential quarters.
"Rin," Bael said, placing a heavy, trembling hand on her shoulder. "We can't fight Thorne's entire battalion. But the manual override valve for the ballast system is on the main command bridge. If we can destroy the hydraulic regulator, we can force the floodgates to shut."
"Let's go," Rin said, her voice dropping into that deep, double-tonal resonance that vibrated through the air like a sub-bass current. "Elias, lead the way."
"Keep close, little Echo," the blind navigator whispered, a grim smile touching his lips. "The air is thick with steam and lead ahead."
They sprinted out of the brig, tearing through the maintenance corridors of Sector Two. Elias moved like a ghost, his long gray hair trailing behind him as he guided them through forgotten drainage pipes and auxiliary utility shafts, bypassing the heavily guarded main intersections.
But as they neared the entrance to the Main Command Bridge, the shortcut ended.
The corridor leading to the bridge was a massive, vaulted iron gallery lined with heavy steam conduits. At the far end stood a massive, reinforced blast door, guarded by a dozen armored Armada soldiers. They were armed with heavy, tripod-mounted repeating steam-cannons and repeating rifles, their dark iron visors reflecting the harsh, white spotlight beams sweeping the hall.
"Intruders!" a guard roared, his voice amplified by his helmet's vocal grill. "It's the scavenger girl! Fire!"
HISS-CRACK!
A devastating volley of pressurized steam-bolts and iron darts erupted from the barricade, chewing through the rusted iron walls and floor of the gallery.
"Get down!" Bael yelled, throwing himself behind a thick brass condenser pipe.
But Rin did not duck.
The raw, primordial power of the symbiosis surged through her veins, a wild, untamed current that demanded to be released. She stepped forward into the middle of the gallery, her basalt-scaled arms crossed in front of her face.
Thump... Thump... Thump...
The rhythmic heartbeat of the deep ocean resonated in her chest. As the volley of iron darts tore toward her, Rin channeled her energy outward, creating a sudden, violent expansion of pressure in the air around her—a physical wall of condensed moisture and localized kinetic force.
BOOM!
The incoming steam-bolts and iron projectiles struck the invisible barrier, their kinetic energy instantly neutralized as they clattered harmlessly to the iron floor.
The guards gasped, their visors tilting upward in absolute disbelief. "What is she?! She’s a monster!"
"My turn," Rin whispered.
With a sudden, explosive kick of her legs, she closed the fifty-meter distance in the blink of an eye, her body moving with the supernatural velocity of a hunting shark striking its prey. She lunged over the barricade, her basalt-plated hand slamming into the tripod of the primary steam-cannon.
CRUNCH.
The heavy brass weapon was pulverized under her grip, its pressurized boiler exploding in a spectacular cloud of superheated white steam. Rin spun through the vapor, her obsidian-like claws slicing through the armored breastplates of the nearest two guards. The impact threw them backward through the air, their heavy iron armor denting as they slammed into the gallery walls.
The remaining soldiers panicked, retreating toward the blast doors, but Rin was already among them. She was a silent, lethal blur of green light and dark scales, her movements fluid and unstoppable. Within thirty seconds, the entire security squad lay defeated on the floor, their weapons shattered and their armor ruined.
Bael and Elias ran up behind her, their eyes wide as they stared at the devastation she had caused.
"By the Trench, nhóc..." Bael muttered, his single eye staring at her basalt-scaled forearms, which were completely unblemished by the steam or the iron darts. "You're... you're stronger than any machine I've ever built."
"The blast doors are locked from the inside," Elias warned, his hand tracing the cold, seamless iron of the massive command bridge doors. "The locking bolts are three inches of solid tempered steel."
Rin stepped up to the doors. She did not look for a control panel. She placed her basalt-scaled palms flat against the cold seam where the two massive iron plates met.
The glowing runes on her neck turned a blinding, pure white. She closed her eyes, connecting her mind to the structural molecules of the metal, finding the weak points where the salt and rust of the ocean had secretly eaten away at the steel over the decades.
"Open," she commanded.
With a low, agonizing groan of protesting metal, she pushed.
CREEEEEECH—SNAP!
The three-inch steel locking bolts sheared completely, snapping like dry twigs inside the door frame. The massive blast doors buckled inward, sliding open with a deafening crash that echoed throughout the command bridge.
Rin stepped through the ruined threshold, her amber eyes locked on the center of the bridge.
The command bridge was a wide, circular room surrounded by reinforced glass observation ports overlooking the stormy sea outside. In the center sat the main ballast console, its brass levers pulled completely forward, indicators flashing a critical, blood-red warning: SECTOR 7 PURGE IN PROGRESS — 80% CAPACITY.
Standing before the console, his massive black iron power-armor hissing with steam, was Commander Thorne.
He did not look surprised to see them. He slowly turned around, his cold, gray eyes staring at Rin with a mixture of clinical interest and absolute contempt.
"Impressive," Thorne’s deep, gravelly voice echoed through his vocal grill. "The anomalous mutation has exceeded our highest estimates. The data gathered from your carcass will ensure the Iron Armada's supremacy over the deep for the next century."
"Stop the purge, Thorne," Rin said, her voice carrying that terrifying, double-tonal resonance that made the glass windows of the bridge vibrate. "Close the gates. Now."
"The purge cannot be stopped, child," Thorne sneered, slowly drawing a massive, heavy-caliber steam-pistol from his hip. "Sector Seven is already filled with the salt. The weak must be cleansed to preserve the strong. It is the law of the sea."
He raised the weapon, pointing it directly at Rin's chest.
But before he could pull the trigger, Bael let out a roar of pure, paternal rage. Armed with a heavy iron wrench he had salvaged from the gallery, the rugged welder lunged forward, swinging the weapon directly at Thorne's helmet.
"Get away from her, you tin-can bastard!"
CLANG!
The wrench struck Thorne’s armored shoulder, but the black iron power-armor didn't even dent. Thorne didn't even flinch. With a brutal, backhanded sweep of his heavy iron gauntlet, he struck Bael across the face.
The force of the blow sent Bael flying across the bridge. He crashed heavily against the structural metal pillars, his head striking the iron corner before he slumped to the floor, unconscious, a dark streak of blood flowing from his temple.
"Bael!" Rin screamed.
The sight of her protector—the man who had fed her, clothed her, and shielded her from the cruel world of the Rust Ship—lying broken on the floor triggered something deep and terrifying inside Rin’s soul.
The delicate balance of the symbiosis shattered, replaced by a wild, volcanic tide of pure, unadulterated fury.
The emerald-green runes on her neck didn't just glow; they erupted, releasing a brilliant, blinding shockwave of green light that shattered the remaining glass windows of the command bridge. The cold, stormy sea wind rushed into the room, bringing with it the freezing spray of the ocean.
Her basalt-scaled forearms grew larger, the dark obsidian scales creeping up past her shoulders and neck, forming a jagged, armored skin of dark stone. Her amber eyes turned completely green, glowing like twin lanterns in a storm.

[The Echo is angry...] the collective voice of the Guardian and the ocean roared inside her head, but this time, it was entirely under her control. [The iron must bend!]
With a primal, terrifying shriek that echoed across the stormy sea, Rin launched herself at Commander Thorne, her basalt claws ready to tear the black iron of the Armada to pieces.
