Chapter 11 - The Secret Investor

Zurich, Switzerland, felt like another planet compared to the humid asphalt and glaring sun of Austin. Crisp alpine air drifted through the open balcony doors of the penthouse suite overlooking Lake Zurich, carrying the faint, soothing chime of distant cathedral bells.

I sat at a sleek oak desk, reviewing the global portfolio consolidation reports for Aethelgard Holdings. In less than three months, what started as a regional real-estate reclamation project in Texas had expanded into a multi-billion-dollar international investment fund spanning Zurich, London, and Singapore.

A soft knock echoed at the private elevator doors of the penthouse.

“Come in, Julian,” I said without turning around.

The private elevator chime chimed softly, and Julian Sterling—a brilliant venture capitalist and my oldest childhood friend who had quietly orchestrated the secret secondary share purchases behind the scenes—walked into the room, holding a chilled bottle of Dom Pérignon and two crystal flutes.

“You’re working too hard, Claire,” Julian said with a warm, easy smile, setting the champagne down on the desk and popping the cork with a satisfying *pop*. “The global portfolio is already outperforming our Q3 projections by three hundred percent. Even the Wall Street analysts are calling you the ‘Ice Queen of Austin.’”

I finally turned around, accepting the crystal flute Julian handed me. “Let them call me what they want, Julian. Respect in international finance isn't won by being polite; it’s won by leaving no survivors.”

Julian laughed, clinking his glass against mine. “Speaking of survivors... I received an interesting dispatch from our legal attachés in Texas this morning.”

My eyes narrowed slightly. “Go on.”

“Evan Rowan’s prison sentence was upheld on appeal. No reduction,” Julian said, taking a sip of champagne. “And Margaret suffered a severe stroke in federal medical custody last Tuesday. The Westlake mansion was completely demolished yesterday morning to make way for the Arthur Sterling Public Botanical Garden. Local news stations broadcast it live across the state.”

I stared out at the shimmering surface of Lake Zurich, watching a white ferry glide silently across the water. A profound sense of closure washed over me—not joy, not triumph, but a deep, tranquil peace. The ghosts of my past had finally been laid to rest.

“And Leah?” I asked quietly.

“Extradited from Mexico last night,” Julian replied, his expression turning serious. “She’s currently sitting in a federal holding cell in El Paso facing wire fraud and identity theft charges. Her high-society friends in Dallas have all blocked her phone numbers. She’s completely alone.”

“Karma doesn't miss an address, Julian,” I said softly, finishing my champagne and setting the flute down on the desk.

“So, what’s next for Aethelgard Holdings?” Julian asked, leaning against the edge of the desk. “We’ve conquered Texas, secured our European foothold, and restructured our Asian tech investments. Are you ready to take a vacation?”

I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out toward the snow-capped peaks of the Swiss Alps as the morning sun broke over the horizon in a blaze of golden light.

“Vacations are for people who are still looking backward, Julian,” I said, turning to face him with a calm, resolute smile. “My father’s legacy is secure. Now, it’s time to build a new world.”
