Chapter 12 - Broken Cradles

Inside a dreary, fluorescent-lit child protective services facility in El Paso, the air smelled of stale coffee, cheap disinfectant, and desperation. Leah Mason sat on a hard plastic chair in the corner of the waiting room, wearing an oversized gray tracksuit with her hair pulled back into a messy, unwashed ponytail. Gone were the designer dresses, the Louboutin heels, and the arrogant smiles that once graced the executive suites of Austin.
The heavy glass door swung open, and a federal caseworker walked in carrying a clipboard, flanked by two armed security guards.
“Leah Mason?” the caseworker called out coldly.
Leah stood up quickly, wringing her hands together, her eyes darting nervously around the room. “Yes? Are the babies here? Can I see my sons?”
“Your parental rights were legally terminated by a Travis County family court judge three days ago,” the caseworker said without an ounce of sympathy. “Genetic testing confirmed that neither Evan Rowan nor any registered relative of the Rowan estate is the biological father of the children. Furthermore, due to your pending federal indictment for international wire fraud and identity theft, the infants have been placed into permanent state adoption custody.”
Leah let out a piercing, hysterical shriek, dropping to her knees on the linoleum floor. “No! You can't do that! They’re my boys! Who is the father then? Tell me who the father is!”
“According to international DNA database matches processed this morning,” the caseworker continued impassively, “the biological father is a fugitive executive from a shell company in the Cayman Islands who fled the country six months ago. He has refused all custody claims.”
Leah sobbed uncontrollably, rocking back and forth on the hard floor, finally realizing the horrifying magnitude of her own destruction. She had traded her integrity, her career, and her freedom for a fabricated fantasy of wealth and power, believing she could outsmart everyone around her. Instead, she had ended up abandoned by her lovers, stripped of her children, and facing twenty years in federal prison.
As the security guards gently but firmly pulled her to her feet and slapped steel handcuffs around her wrists, Leah caught a glimpse of a television screen mounted on the wall of the waiting room.
The morning financial news was broadcasting a live report from Zurich, Switzerland.
On the screen, a crystal-clear image of me flashed across the monitor. I was standing on the balcony of a magnificent glass-and-steel corporate headquarters, speaking at an international economic summit as the newly appointed CEO and chairwoman of Aethelgard Global Enterprises. The anchor’s voice echoed clearly through the sterile room:
*“...and in other financial news, American billionaire Claire Sterling-Rowan announced a historic twenty-billion-dollar green energy initiative in Europe today, further solidifying her status as one of the most powerful corporate leaders in the modern world...”*
May you like
Leah stared at the screen through tear-blurred eyes, the bitter taste of utter defeat burning in her throat as the guards dragged her backward toward the holding cells.
