Chapter 5 - The DNA Paradox

Inside the sterile, fluorescent-lit visiting room of the Travis County detention facility, Evan sat hunched over a steel table, wearing an orange jumpsuit that swallowed his frame. The man who had once swaggered through boardrooms as the golden boy of Austin real estate now looked like a ghost of his former self—broken, exhausted, and paranoid.
The heavy metal door buzzed open, and his defense attorney, a high-priced criminal litigator named Richard Sterling, slid into the seat across from him, dropping a thick manila folder onto the stainless steel.
“It’s worse than we thought, Evan,” Sterling said without preamble. “The federal prosecutor isn't offering a plea deal. They have an airtight paper trail connecting the corporate slush funds to Leah’s personal accounts, and worse—they have internal emails proving you authorized the transfer of proprietary land surveys to Apex Capital.”
Evan buried his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking. “I didn't know she was working with Apex... she swore she loved me! She told me we were building a future together!”
“Love doesn't forge corporate wire transfers, Evan,” Sterling sighed, rubbing his temples. “And that brings us to your personal life. Have you heard from Leah since you were arrested?”
Evan dropped his hands, staring blankly at his lawyer. “No. She hasn't answered my calls. Her penthouse phone has been disconnected.”
“That’s because Leah emptied her joint offshore accounts yesterday morning and caught a private charter flight to Cabo San Lucas,” Sterling said bluntly. “She’s gone, Evan. And she left the twins behind with a nanny at a cheap motel on I-35.”
Evan felt the breath leave his lungs as if he had been punched in the stomach. “The... the twins? But she swore they were mine!”
“CPS took custody of the infants three hours ago,” Sterling continued, sliding a single sheet of paper across the table. “And out of sheer professional curiosity, I subpoenaed private hospital records from the maternity ward where Leah gave birth. Evan... you need to look at this paternity test.”
Evan’s trembling fingers picked up the paper. His eyes scanned the DNA compatibility percentage line at the bottom of the lab report.
*Paternity Match Probability with Evan Rowan: 0.00%.*
*Biological Father Match: Unregistered / Pending.*
“Zero?” Evan whispered, his voice cracking into a pathetic whine. “Zero percent? How... how is that possible? They look just like me! Everyone said—”
“They don't look like you, Evan,” Sterling interrupted ruthlessly. “Leah was sleeping with at least three different senior executives at Apex Capital and local real estate syndicates to secure financing for her personal investments. You were just the sucker with the corporate checkbook who happened to be married to the majority shareholder.”
Evan slumped back against the metal chair, staring blankly at the ceiling tiles as fluorescent lights hummed overhead. He had lost his wife, his company, his freedom, and now, the very children he had proudly paraded into his home as proof of his legacy weren't even his.

“Claire...” Evan whispered into the empty air, tasting the bitter ash of his own complete and utter destruction. “Claire knew... she knew everything from the very beginning.”
