Chapter 4 - THE SWAP

Dr. Gregory Robert sat behind a massive mahogany desk, surrounded by medical diplomas and

leather-bound books. He was a man in his late fifties, with sharp blue eyes and a reputation for

absolute thoroughness. When Daniel, Laura, and Evelyn walked into the room, he looked up

from a set of papers laid out before him.

Laura immediately took charge, stepping forward with her hand extended. "Dr. Robert, thank

you so much for seeing us on such short notice. I'm Laura Jacobson, this is my husband Daniel,

and this is his mother, Evelyn. As I noted in the intake file, Evelyn’s condition has become entirely

unmanageable at home."

Dr. Robert didn't smile. He looked at Laura, then at Daniel, and finally down at Evelyn, who sat

quietly in a chair, her hands trembling in her lap.

"Please, sit down," Dr. Robert said, his voice flat.

Laura took the prime seat next to Evelyn, while Daniel remained standing near the door, his

arms crossed over his chest.

"Dr. Robert," Laura began, her voice filled with manufactured emotion. "The family doctor, Dr.

Harrison, agreed that Evelyn is suffering from severe cognitive impairment. She has begun

hurting herself, wandering into the streets, and she even attempted to steal money from our joint

accounts out of confusion. The power-of-attorney documents are right there in the file I provided.

We need an immediate placement order for a secure memory care facility."

Dr. Robert picked up a thick document from his desk. It wasn't the packet Laura had compiled.

It was the comprehensive forensic file Daniel had handed to the receptionist.

"Mrs. Jacobson," Dr. Robert said slowly, adjusting his glasses. "I have spent the last fifteen

minutes reviewing the materials submitted to my office. And I must say, this is one of the most

clear-cut cases I have seen in my thirty years of practice."

Laura let out a long, theatrical sigh of relief, turning to Daniel. "Oh, thank goodness. You see,

honey? The doctor agrees. It’s finally over."

"Yes," Dr. Robert continued, his eyes locking onto Laura with the cold precision of a laser. "It is

indeed over. But perhaps not in the way you think. I'm looking at a series of high-resolution

digital photographs detailing severe, deep-tissue contusions around the patient's wrists and

ankles—bruises that are entirely inconsistent with a 'fall in a rosebush,' but perfectly consistent

with forceful, physical restraint."

Laura’s smile froze. The color drained from her face instantly. "I... I beg your pardon? What

photos?"

Dr. Robert flipped the page. "I am also looking at a comprehensive financial ledger detailing

the systemic liquidation of Evelyn Jacobson’s personal savings account—specifically, a pending

eighty-thousand-dollar wire transfer to a shell entity known as LJ Holdings LLC, initiated from an

IP address matching your personal laptop."

Laura gasped, her head snapping around to look at Daniel. Daniel didn't move a muscle. He

stood like a statue, his expression completely blank.

"Daniel!" Laura hissed, her voice cracking. "What is this? What did you give him? This is a

mistake! Your mother is crazy! She made all this up!"

At that exact moment, Evelyn stopped trembling. She sat up straight in her chair, her

shoulders dropping into a relaxed, powerful posture. She looked directly at Laura, her eyes

entirely clear, brilliant, and completely devoid of confusion.

"I didn't make up anything, Laura," Evelyn said, her voice steady, resonant, and strong. "And I

certainly didn't forget who my husband was. Arthur died seven years ago, but you're about to

lose everything today."

Laura scrambled backward in her chair, her eyes wide with terror as she realized she had

walked directly into a perfectly orchestrated ambush.

"You..." Laura whispered, looking between mother and son. "You both set me up."

"No, Laura," Daniel said, stepping forward, his voice dropping to a dangerous, quiet rumble.
