Chapter 8 - THE LEGAL BATTLE

The courtroom was dead silent as the preliminary hearing began. Laura sat at the defense table,
stripped of her elegant dresses, wearing an orange county jail jumpsuit. Her hair was unwashed,
her face pale, and the smug arrogance that had defined her for months was completely gone.
Next to her sat Dr. Harrison, looking broken and defeated.
Daniel and Evelyn sat together in the front row of the gallery, flanked by the state prosecutor,
Sarah Jenkins.
"Your Honor," Sarah Jenkins began, standing before the judge. "The state presents a mountain
of undeniable forensic evidence detailing a highly coordinated, malicious conspiracy to exploit,
abuse, and defraud Evelyn Jacobson. We have recovered over ninety-five percent of the stolen
assets from the defendant’s shell corporations, thanks to the immediate intervention of Mr.
Daniel Jacobson."
Laura’s defense attorney stood up, trying desperately to salvage the situation. "Your Honor, my
client was suffering from immense psychological stress due to her husband’s prolonged military
deployment. She made poor financial decisions, yes, but the allegations of physical abuse are
entirely circumstantial—"
"Circumstantial?" Prosecutor Jenkins interrupted, gesturing toward the large projection
screen in the courtroom.
With a click of a button, the restored home security footage began to play. The entire
courtroom watched in stunned silence as Laura’s voice echoed through the speakers. On the
screen, Laura could be seen violently pushing Evelyn into the dark bedroom, slamming the door,
and turning the heavy brass key.
“No one will ever trust you,” Laura’s recorded voice sneered from the past. “You’re just a crazy
old woman. Daniel belongs to me now, and so does your money.”
A collective gasp ran through the gallery. The judge’s expression turned utterly disgusted. He
looked down at Laura, who had buried her face in her hands, weeping hysterically.
"I have seen enough," the judge said, his gavel coming down with a thunderous crack. "Bail is
denied for both defendants. This court finds more than sufficient evidence to proceed to a full
criminal trial on all counts. Defendants will remain remanded in custody."
As the bailiffs led Laura away, she caught Daniel’s eye one last time. She stopped, her eyes
flashing with a desperate, pathetic hope. "Daniel, please! I love you! We can fix this! Don't do this
to me!"
Daniel simply turned his head away, reaching out to wrap his arm securely around his

mother’s shoulders. The woman who had given him everything was finally safe, and the monster
who had tried to destroy them was going away for a very long time.
