Chapter 5 - THE TRAP SPRINGS

The office door swung open, but it wasn't a nurse who stepped inside. Two tall, uniform-clad
officers from the local police department entered, followed closely by a woman in a sharp grey
suit holding a briefcase.
"Mrs. Laura Jacobson?" the woman in the suit asked. "I am Detective Miller with the Financial
Crimes and Elder Abuse Division. This is Officer Davis and Officer Collins."
Laura stood up, her hands shaking violently as she gripped her designer purse. "This is
absurd! This is a private family medical matter! Daniel, tell them! Tell them she’s sick!"
Daniel didn't look at her. He looked at Detective Miller. "Detective, the flash drive containing
the complete, unedited cloud backups of the home security system—showing my wife physically
locking my mother in the room and denying her food—has already been uploaded to your secure
server. Additionally, the digital audio recorder under the dining table has captured her
admissions from this morning."
Laura’s breath hitched. She looked around the room like a cornered animal. "You recorded
me? In my own home? That’s illegal! That won't hold up in court!"
"Actually, Laura," Daniel said, a faint, humorless smile touching his lips. "In this state, a home
security system with clear audio-video disclosure notices posted on the front door—which you
forgot I installed three years ago—constitutes legal implied consent. And as for the recorder, it
was placed in a common area to document the active destruction of my mother’s estate. It’s
entirely admissible in an elder exploitation investigation."
Detective Miller stepped forward, producing a pair of steel handcuffs. "Laura Jacobson, you
are under arrest for grand larceny, financial exploitation of the elderly, and domestic assault. You
have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of
law."
As the cold metal clicked around Laura’s wrists, she lost all pretense of sophistication. Her face
contorted into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage.
"You think you've won, Daniel?!" she screamed as the officers began guiding her out of the
room. "You're a penniless soldier! That money belongs to this family! I built this life! You can't do
this to me! I'll ruin you!"
Her voice faded down the clinic hallway, replaced by the quiet, steady hum of the building's
air conditioning.
Dr. Robert stood up from his desk, extending a hand to Daniel. "Mr. Jacobson, in my line of
work, I see a lot of terrible things. But I rarely see justice delivered with such... tactical precision.
Your mother is completely lucid. Her cognitive scores are exceptional for her age."
"Thank you, Doctor," Daniel said, shaking his hand.
He turned to his mother. Evelyn stood up from her chair, looking at her son with tears finally
welling in her eyes. But these weren't tears of fear; they were tears of profound relief.
"Is it over, Daniel?" she asked softly.

Daniel wrapped his arms around her, holding her close. "The trap is sprung, Mom. But the
investigation is just beginning. We're going to get every single dollar back."
