Chapter 11 - THE BLADE IN THE DARKNESS

Marcus Vance stood motionless beneath the flickering sodium lamps, his tactical carbine slung loosely over his shoulder, his face cast in deep, impenetrable shadows.

Emily sat frozen at the workbench, her hands hovering above the laptop keyboard, staring at Marcus with an expression of pure, unadulterated disbelief.

“Marcus...” Emily whispered, her voice trembling violently. “What... what are you doing? Why did you disable the firewall?”

Marcus didn't answer immediately. He slowly lowered the satellite transmitter, slipping it into his tactical vest, and turned his gaze toward me as I stepped out of the stairwell, my Sig Sauer still gripped tightly in my hand.

“It’s over, Daniel,” Marcus said, his voice completely devoid of the warmth and camaraderie we had shared through countless operations over the past decade and a half. It was the voice of a cold, calculated machine.

“You,” I murmured, the harsh reality locking into place like the tumbler of a heavy security vault. “You were the one holding the master supervisory key all along. Julian wasn't the mastermind—he was just your errand boy.”

Marcus let out a slow, deliberate breath, offering a faint, melancholic smile. “Julian was brilliant with code, I’ll give him that. But he lacked vision, Daniel. He wanted to skim millions from dead trust funds. I wanted the entire board. I wanted the infrastructure you built when you walked away from Apex Security.”

“You framed me,” I said, stepping forward slowly, my boots clicking rhythmically against the concrete floor. “Every transaction Victor made, every forged document, every dollar routed through the BVI shell companies—you set it up so the federal indictments would point straight to my retirement accounts.”

“It’s poetry, really,” Marcus replied smoothly, resting his hand casually on the grip of his sidearm. “The legendary security expert, a man hailed as a hero by prosecutors across the country, exposed as the kingpin of an international extortion ring. Who do you think the federal grand jury is going to believe, Daniel? A retired handyman with millions in hidden offshore accounts, or a decorated veteran who tried to stop him?”

“You killed my grandfather,” Emily shouted, her voice breaking as she stood up from the stool, tears streaming down her pale cheeks. “You were the one who broke into the estate that night. You pushed him down the stairs!”

Marcus looked at her, his expression softening into a chilling mockery of pity. “He was stubborn, Emily. He found the ledger entry before Victor could shred it. I simply helped gravity along its natural path. Just like I’m going to help both of you disappear into the Potomac tonight.”

Before Marcus could even twitch toward his holster, the heavy metal side doors of the warehouse blew wide open with a deafening crash.

Through the billows of rising river fog poured a dozen heavily armed federal marshals in matte-black tactical gear, their assault rifles instantly locking onto Marcus with laser precision.

“Federal agents! Drop your weapon! Hands behind your head, now!”

Marcus froze, his hand hovering inches from his sidearm. He looked from the federal agents surrounding the perimeter to me, his jaw clenching in sudden, violent realization.

“You stalled me,” Marcus hissed, his eyes narrowing into slits of pure venom as he stared at me. “The comms channel... you kept me talking on the open frequency so the cyber-crime division could trace the proxy signal straight to my terminal.”

“I’m a security expert, Marcus,” I said coldly, lowering my weapon as the lead marshal stepped forward to cuff him. “I always check my backups before I walk into a trap.”
