Chapter 17 - RACE AGAINST THE CLOCK

“They knew we were coming,” MacTavish shouted over the blaring klaxon, his rifle snapping up toward the upper catwalks where automatic security turrets hummed to life, their twin barrels locking onto our position.
“Get down!” I roared, grabbing Emily by the collar and shoving her behind the thick steel plating of an industrial generator housing just as a hail of suppression fire chewed viciously into the concrete floor where we had been standing seconds before.
Sparks rained down in a blinding shower of white-hot metal.
“Pop, the control console!” Emily cried out, pointing toward a glass-enclosed operations booth suspended above the dry dock basin. “That’s the primary terminal! If we don't access the core router and halt the purge sequence within three minutes, every server in this facility will melt down into slag, and all proof of the syndicate will vanish forever!”
“MacTavish!” I called out over the deafening roar of the automated turrets. “Can your team suppress those sentry guns long enough to clear the staircase?”
“We’ll buy you the window!” the British captain roared back, signaling his men. “Go!”
The Royal Marines opened fire in a coordinated volley of synchronized suppression, their concentrated rounds shattering the optical sensors of the primary automated turrets in a flurry of sparks and shattered glass.
I didn't hesitate. I grabbed Emily’s hand, and together we sprinted across the open metal grating toward the base of the control room stairs, boots pounding against the steel as suppression rounds ricocheted off the guardrails around us.
We burst through the glass door of the operations booth, slamming it shut behind us.
Emily threw herself into the rolling leather chair before the banks of glowing computer monitors, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with frantic speed.
“The firewall is locked behind a triple-layered cryptographic hash!” she gasped, sweat beading on her forehead as lines of red error code cascaded down the primary screen. “I need a master override key... a physical root certificate!”
“Use my old administrator token,” I said, pulling a small, encrypted biometric USB drive from my dog tags and slamming it into the console port. “Root ID: Hale-Apex-01.”
The screen flashed violently from red to amber, then settled into a steady, glowing blue.
*“Biometric verified. Welcome back, Director Hale.”*
“I’m in!” Emily cried out, her fingers dancing across the keys as she initiated a counter-purge script. “Downloading the complete operational manifesto, funding manifests, and the identity of the primary buyer behind Project Aegis.”
The progress bar on the screen ticked upward: *10%... 45%... 80%...*
Suddenly, the computer screen went pitch black.

A new text prompt appeared in stark, glowing white letters against the darkness:
*“Hello, Daniel. It took you long enough to find the end of the line.”*
