Chapter 7 - CHECKMATE ON THE CATWALK

The sodium lamps hummed overhead, casting long, distorted shadows across the concrete floor of the warehouse. Julian Vance rested his hands casually on the rusted iron railing of the catwalk, looking down at us with the detached amusement of a chess grandmaster surveying a board where he had already captured the queen.

“Marcus, my dear brother,” Julian called out, his voice echoing cleanly through the cavernous space. “I see you’re still carrying Daniel’s water. Some dogs never learn who actually feeds them.”

“Shut your mouth, Julian,” Marcus snarled, his carbine slowly raising toward the catwalk. “You embezzled millions from Apex’s reserve funds and framed innocent people. The game is over. Federal marshals are already tracking your satellite relays.”

“Are they?” Julian smiled, lifting the small black remote in his hand and pressing a thumb against the primary toggle switch. “Let’s check the traffic reports, shall we?”

A loud beep echoed from Emily’s laptop. She gasped, her fingers flying across the trackpad to open a terminal window.

“Pop!” she cried out, her face draining of color. “He’s not uploading the data... he’s executing a scorched-earth purge. Every single financial record, every offshore ledger, every piece of forensic evidence we gathered from Victor’s server—it’s being wiped clean from every cloud node simultaneously.”

Victor Hale laughed, stepping up beside Julian on the rail. He looked down at me with a triumphant, malicious sneer. “You thought you could walk into my estate and outsmart us, Daniel? You’re nothing more than a glorified locksmith who got lucky in the security boom. Julian built the architecture of this entire operation before you even sold your first company.”

I didn't raise my voice. I didn't flinch. I simply stood there, my hand resting firmly on the grip of my Sig Sauer, my eyes locked on Julian’s calm, unblinking expression.

“Julian,” I said, my voice carrying clearly through the silent warehouse. “Did you really think I didn't anticipate a data purge protocol?”

Julian’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second—just a microscopic twitch at the corner of his mouth. “What are you talking about?”

“When I sold Apex Security twelve years ago,” I continued, taking a slow step forward into the dim light, “I didn't just hand over the keys and walk away. I retained sole ownership of the physical offline cold-storage servers housed in an underground bunker beneath my mountain cabin.”

Julian’s expression hardened. “The cold-storage drives were decommissioned in 2018.”

“That’s what I wanted people like you to think,” I replied softly. “Every transaction you made through the BVI shell companies, every dollar you skimmed from the trust funds, every encrypted message you and Victor exchanged over the last three years—it was automatically mirrored to my offline bunker the second your scripts touched the network.”

Emily suddenly looked up from her screen, a triumphant light flashing in her eyes. “Pop! The automated sync script just triggered! We didn't lose the data—we just captured the exact moment Julian initiated the purge. His digital signature, his private IP address, and his bank routing numbers in Zurich are locked into our offline vault right now!”

Julian’s face twisted into absolute fury. He slammed his fist down onto the iron railing. “Kill them!” he screamed at Victor.

Victor raised his suppressed pistol and squeezed the trigger.

The shot cracked sharply in the enclosed space, the bullet ricocheting off a steel container inches from my shoulder. But before Victor could squeeze off a second round, a deafening roar erupted from the far end of the warehouse.

Marcus hadn't waited for an order. His carbine barked twice, the muzzle flash cutting through the gloom.

The bullets struck the iron railing directly beneath Victor’s feet, sending a shower of orange sparks cascading down. Victor shrieked, losing his footing on the slick metal surface, dropping his pistol as he scrambled backward in sheer terror.

“Move, move, move!” Marcus shouted, sprinting toward the metal staircase leading up to the catwalk.
