Chapter 5 - The Corporate Execution

The boardroom of Carter Development Group was suffocatingly tense. Michael Carter sat at the head of the long glass conference table, sweating profusely through his bespoke suit. Flanking him were his top corporate attorneys and executive board members. Across from them sat three stern, unblinking federal auditors from the Securities and Exchange Commission, flanked by a woman who completely dominated the room despite her quiet presence.
She was dressed in a pristine, sharp navy-blue power suit, her blonde hair styled flawlessly, and a pair of dark designer glasses hiding her eyes. She was introduced to the board as Victoria Vance, the newly appointed chief legal counsel for Vance Global Enterprises, which had quietly purchased a controlling fifty-one percent stake in Michael's company through various anonymous offshore shell corporations over the last forty-eight hours.
Michael had no choice but to accept the meeting. His company was on the absolute brink of total insolvency due to the sudden, inexplicable freezing of his insurance payout and a massive, coordinated short-attack on his public stock.
"Mr. Carter," I said, my voice modulated slightly lower, adopting a cold, highly professional mid-Atlantic accent that bore no resemblance to the soft, submissive wife he had shoved off a mountain cliff. I slowly removed my dark glasses, revealing my piercing green eyes. I had applied subtle, expert makeup to cover the slight facial scar, altering my appearance just enough to look like a completely different, high-powered corporate elite, yet retaining the core features that would deeply trigger his intense paranoia.
Michael gasped the moment he looked into my eyes, his hands locking onto the edge of the glass table so hard his knuckles turned completely white. He stared at me, his chest heaving as he struggled to breathe.
"E... Emma?" he whispered, his voice cracking in front of his entire board of directors.
The corporate attorneys looked at each other in deep embarrassment. "Mr. Carter, please," his lead lawyer whispered frantically. "This is Ms. Victoria Vance, the majority shareholder representative. Control yourself."
"No... no, look at her!" Michael yelled, standing up abruptly, pointing a trembling finger straight at my face. "It's her! She's alive! She's trying to ruin me!"
I maintained absolute, icy composure, tilting my head slightly with an expression of calm, professional concern. "Mr. Carter, are you completely well? I assure you, my name is Victoria Vance. If your current psychological instability is a result of the tragic, recent passing of your late wife, I offer my deepest condolences. However, we are here today strictly to discuss the catastrophic financial mismanagement of this firm."
"You b-bitch..." Michael growled, taking a step toward me, but Arthur's elite security guards instantly stepped forward, forming an impenetrable human wall between us.
"Let's get right down to the facts, gentlemen," I continued smoothly, sliding a thick leather folder across the table to the federal auditors. "Over the past forty-eight hours, Vance Global's internal forensic accountants have uncovered massive, highly illegal anomalies within Carter Development Group. Specifically, the systematic embezzlement of twenty million dollars from the employee pension fund, routed directly into a private offshore account in the Cayman Islands registered under the name of your executive assistant, Ashley."
The lead SEC auditor opened the folder, scanned the documents, and his face turned to absolute stone. "This is ironclad. Mr. Carter, these records show clear, definitive wire transfers signed by your digital token just three hours after your late wife's reported accident."
"That's a lie! I was hacked! The systems were manipulated!" Michael screamed, looking around the room frantically, but he found absolutely no allies. Every single board member looked away from him in disgust.
"Furthermore," I added, a sharp, predatory smile flashing across my lips for a split second. "Vance Global is officially executing our majority shareholder right to terminate Michael Carter from his position as Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately. Your corporate assets are frozen, your building access is revoked, and the federal government has already issued an administrative travel ban preventing you from leaving the state."
I stood up slowly, putting my dark glasses back on. I leaned over the table, bringing my face just inches from his sweating, terrified countenance.
"You are completely broke, Mr. Carter," I whispered in my true, natural voice, just loud enough for only his ears to catch. "And the ice is getting incredibly thin."
May you like
Before he could react, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open, and four uniformed federal agents walked in, badges displayed proudly. "Michael Carter, you are officially under federal investigation for corporate fraud and grand larceny. Step away from the table."
As they escorted a screaming, completely broken Michael out of the glass tower in handcuffs, I stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the police cruisers waiting below. The first phase of my ultimate vengeance was complete. His reputation was dead. His company was gone. His wealth was completely erased. Now, it was time to turn my focus to his beloved partner in crime.
