Chapter 7 - The Masterpiece of Madness

Michael Carter sat in the dim, claustrophobic confines of his federal holding cell, waiting for his high-priced defense attorneys to post his multi-million-dollar bail. He was hyperventilating, his eyes darting frantically to every corner of the concrete room. Every time the overhead fluorescent lights flickered, he saw flashes of the frozen cliff, the white snow, and my green eyes staring back at him through the dark.

The heavy iron door of the cell groaned open, and a stern guard stepped aside. "Carter, your bail has been posted by an anonymous corporate benefactor. You're free to go pending trial. Your private transport is waiting in the courtyard."

Michael let out a gasp of immense relief, scrambling out of the cell as fast as his legs could carry him. He rushed through the administrative booking area, grabbed his personal belongings, and ran out into the cool evening air of the secure courtyard. Waiting for him was a sleek, black luxury limousine with heavily tinted windows.

Assuming Ashley had somehow secured a wealthy ally to rescue him, Michael threw the door open and leaped into the plush leather interior. "Ashley! Thank God, we need to get out of the country right now—"

The words died completely in his throat.

The door clicked shut behind him, locking automatically with a heavy, mechanical thud. Sitting across from him in the spacious cabin was not Ashley. It was Arthur Vance, looking like an absolute emperor of the underworld, flanked by two massive, armed security specialists.

"Who... who are you?" Michael stammered, scrambling to grip the door handle, but it wouldn't budge. "Let me out of here! This is kidnapping!"

"Sit down, Mr. Carter," Arthur said, his voice dropping like a heavy iron anvil. The pure, unadulterated menace radiating from the billionaire caused Michael's knees to buckle, and he collapsed heavily onto the leather seat.

"My name is Arthur Vance," the billionaire continued, taking a slow sip of an incredibly expensive glass of whiskey. "And you made the catastrophic, fatal mistake of pushing my only daughter off a mountain cliff for pocket change."

Michael's brain scrambled to connect the dots, his face turning an ash-grey color. "Your... your daughter? Emma is your daughter? No... no, she was an orphan! Her mother was a nobody!"

"Her mother was the love of my life, whom I hid away to protect from people far more dangerous than a pathetic little parasite like you," Arthur hissed, his blue eyes flashing with a terrifying, ancient rage. "You thought you were playing a brilliant, high-stakes game for fifty million dollars. But you were merely stepping into a trap I have spent weeks perfecting."

Arthur reached over and pressed a button, activating a large video monitor built into the limousine's partition wall.

The screen cut to a live broadcast from a local Denver news station. A beautiful news anchor stood outside the federal courthouse: *"Breaking news tonight in the shocking Carter Development scandal. Ashley, the executive assistant and romantic partner of former CEO Michael Carter, has just turned herself in to federal prosecutors. We have confirmed she has signed a comprehensive, bombshell confession detailing a horrific, pre-meditated plot orchestrated entirely by Michael Carter to murder his nine-month-pregnant wife, Emma, for a fifty-million-dollar life insurance payout. Prosecutors are officially upgrading the charges to attempted first-degree murder, conspiracy, and fetal endangerment. A state-wide warrant has been issued for Carter's immediate arrest."*

Michael stared at the screen, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly like a fish out of water. The final, desperate structure of his life had completely dissolved.

"She betrayed me..." Michael whispered, his hands flying to his head, tearing at his disheveled hair. "That lying, treacherous bitch betrayed me!"

"She merely survived, just like Emma did," Arthur said coldly, signaling the driver. The limousine accelerated smoothly, moving out into the dark Denver streets. "Right now, the police are searching for you at your home, your office, and your airport hangar. You have nowhere left to run, Michael. No money, no allies, no freedom."

"Where are you taking me?" Michael screamed, slamming his fists against the bulletproof glass windows. "Kill me if you're going to do it! Just end it!"

"Kill you?" Arthur let out a dark, mocking laugh. "Death is far too merciful for what you attempted. No, Michael. We are going back to where it all began. You are going to face the ghost you created, exactly where you tried to bury her."
