Chapter 6 - The Weakest Link

Ashley sat completely alone in the dim, opulent living room of the luxury penthouse apartment Michael had bought her using embezzled corporate funds. The space was in a state of utter, chaotic disarray. Expensive designer clothes, diamond necklaces, and packed suitcases were scattered wildly across the hardwood floor. The news of Michael's highly publicized corporate arrest and the complete freezing of all their shared bank accounts had broken across every major media network just hours ago.

"Pick up the phone, Michael! Damn it, pick up the phone!" Ashley screamed into her cell phone, getting his voicemail for the twentieth consecutive time.

Suddenly, the heavy, reinforced front door of the penthouse opened with a soft, electronic click. Ashley gasped, dropping her phone as she assumed it was the FBI coming to arrest her next.

Instead, I walked into the room completely alone. I wore a stunning, pure white trench coat, my blonde hair flowing freely, stepping over her scattered luxury items with an air of absolute, regal authority.

"Looking for this?" I asked, holding up a sleek black flash drive between my fingers.

Ashley backed away until her knees hit the edge of the plush sofa. Her eyes widened into saucers, her breath hitching in her throat as she looked at me in the flesh, without a veil, without glasses, completely uninjured and radiating immense power.

"E-Emma..." Ashley choked out, her voice barely a squeak. "No... no, this is impossible. You're dead. I watched you fall. You were pregnant... you couldn't have survived that drop. You're a ghost."

"I am the ghost you and Michael created, Ashley," I said coldly, taking a slow step forward. "But as you can clearly see, I am very much made of flesh and blood. And my son is perfectly healthy, sleeping safely in a mansion you could never dream of entering."

Ashley fell to her knees, completely breaking down into desperate, hysterical tears. She reached out her hands in a begging gesture. "Emma, please! Please listen to me! It was all Michael! I swear to God, it was all his idea! He was the one who wanted the fifty million dollars! He was the one who forced you to sign that insurance policy! He told me he loved me, he manipulated me, he said he would kill me if I didn't go along with the plan!"

"Do you honestly think I care about your pathetic excuses?" I asked, my voice completely devoid of any human warmth. "I stood right around the corner at my own funeral, Ashley. I heard you laugh. I heard you call my innocent unborn child 'annoying, dead weight'. I heard you celebrate my murder."

Ashley trembled violently, sobbing so hard she could barely form words. "What... what are you going to do to me? Please don't kill me. Please."

"I don't need to kill you, Ashley. You've already destroyed yourself," I said, tossing the black flash drive onto the floor right in front of her. "Inside that drive is the complete, unedited footage of you and Michael kissing at the church, alongside the full digital paper trail of the twenty million dollars he embezzled and placed directly into your private name. The FBI thinks Michael acted alone. They don't have this evidence yet."

Ashley looked at the drive like it was a venomous snake. "Why... why are you showing me this?"

"Because I am going to offer you a single, final choice," I said, leaning down to look at her. "Michael is currently sitting in a federal holding cell. His lawyers are telling him he faces thirty years in maximum security prison. Tomorrow morning, the district attorney is going to offer him a plea deal if he hands over the person who helped him plan my murder. Who do you think he will blame to save his own skin?"

Ashley's breath hitched. She knew Michael's selfish nature better than anyone. "He... he would betray me in a heartbeat."

"Exactly," I nodded. "So here is my offer. You take that flash drive directly to the federal prosecutors tonight. You sign a full confession detailing every single aspect of how Michael planned to murder me and our baby for the insurance payout. You testify against him in open court. If you do that, my father's legal team will ensure you receive a reduced sentence of five years in a minimum-security facility for corporate complicity. If you refuse, I send this drive to the FBI anonymously, and you will spend the next twenty-five years of your life rotting in a federal penitentiary right alongside him."

Ashley stared at the drive, her tears drying as the raw instinct for basic survival took over. She reached out with a shaking hand and gripped the flash drive tightly.

"I'll do it," she whispered, her voice filled with intense bitterness. "I'll destroy him."

"Good," I said, turning around and walking toward the exit. "Make sure you don't miss a single detail, Ashley. The grand finale is about to begin."
