Chapter 10 - The Dawn of Retribution

The morning sun broke over the city skyline like a jagged blade of light, illuminating the glass facade of Sterling Holdings as our black town car pulled up to the grand entrance. The news of my mother’s arrest and the subsequent federal raids had already leaked to the financial press, sending shockwaves through Wall Street. Reporters and camera crews swarmed the plaza, shouting questions about embezzlement, political corruption, and the sudden collapse of the Sterling dynasty.
Victoria and I stepped out of the car, flanked by four private security guards in sharp black suits. We didn’t hide from the cameras; we walked straight toward the revolving glass doors with absolute, unshakeable authority.
“Mr. Sterling! Mr. Sterling! Is it true that your mother embezzled millions from corporate reserves?” shouted a journalist from the Financial Times, thrusting a microphone toward my face.
“No comment on ongoing investigations,” I said smoothly, pausing for a fraction of a second to look directly into the camera lens. “However, I can assure our shareholders, employees, and partners that Sterling Holdings is undergoing a complete corporate cleansing. As of this morning, all corrupt actors have been removed from leadership, and the truth will soon come to light.”
We strode through the lobby and up to the executive boardroom on the forty-second floor. The emergency board meeting was already in session. Sitting around the long mahogany table were the remaining board members—aged executives who had spent decades bowing to my mother’s tyranny, now sweating profusely as they realized the winds had shifted.
As I pushed the glass doors open and walked into the room, every head turned in stunned silence.
“Daniel?” stuttered Harrison Gable, the senior board vice president, wiping sweat from his forehead with a silk handkerchief. “How... how are you here? We were told you were detained by federal authorities.”
“Reports of my demise were greatly exaggerated, Harrison,” I said, walking to the head of the table and pulling out the central leather chair where my mother used to sit like a queen on her throne. I didn’t sit down yet; I remained standing, leaning my hands on the polished wood.
Victoria dropped her thick manila folder onto the table with a loud, resounding thud that made several directors jump.
“Before any of you vote on emergency liquidation or attempt to distance yourselves from Eleanor Sterling’s criminal enterprise, I suggest you open those folders,” Victoria said coolly.
Harrison trembling opened the folder. Within seconds, his face turned the color of ash. Page after page of wire transfers, secret political kickbacks, offshore accounts, and documented cover-ups of my father’s murder stared back at him.
“This... this is treason,” Harrison whispered, staring at me in horror. “If the SEC sees this, the entire company will be liquidated by the federal government.”
“Not if we self-report and cooperate fully with federal prosecutors under my leadership,” I replied, my voice hard and uncompromising. “Which brings us to the first order of business today: a unanimous vote to strip Eleanor and Lucas Sterling of all voting shares, revoke their executive titles, and transition absolute operational control back to me as permanent CEO and chairman of the board.”
No one spoke. No one dared to object. In the corporate world, survival trumped loyalty every single time.
